COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed in tradition of Englishstyle barley wines, Cereal Killer offers an explosion of full-bodied, liquid goodness. Robust malty flavors converge with caramel, toffee, molasses and dark fruit notes to produce a remarkably complex yet palate-pleasing beer. Its intense malt character is complemented by a subtle citrus finish from the hops. With cellar-aging Cereal Killer’s flavor evolves further, developing a sherry-like aroma and flavor similar to a cask-aged port. Winner of the Gold Medal for Wood and Barrel-Aged Strong Beers at 2009 GABF.

Bottle... Clear, deep, dark, orange ale with a small, frothy, tan head. Vinous, resinous nose of caramel, red wine, fig or date, cocoa and persimmon. Malty-sweet, but then boozy and bitter with flavors of port and cookie. Full-bodied and oily with prickly carbonation. Dark fruit, moderately bitter, dry finish. Hey, vyvvy, thanks for floating me the bottle!

Bottle @ Steve’s Foco. Picked up in KC, possibly by jcnielsen. Thanks, possibly. 2009 vintage. Hazy dark brown appearance with a small brown head. Somewhat oxidized, a bit sugary, brown sugar, light cardboard, a bit fruity aroma. Somewhat strong, moderately boozy, brown sugar, toffee, dark fruity flavor with some booze on the finish. (3.5) Tried against the 2010 vintage thanks to Steve. Sweeter in the nose than the 2009. Flavor is a bit more caramel, toffee taste. Not my favorite beer, a little boozy but drinkable. (3.5)

On tap. Poured a deeper reddish / orange color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, fruity, oranges, citrus and some dark fruits. Tastes of caramel, citrus, fruity, and toffee. Light alcohol finish.

Black with a bit of white head. Roast in aroma with various oatmeal, barley, complex aroma. Medium mouthfeel that was nicely malted adding to drinkability. Some licorice and mollasses and chocolate malt.An enjoyable barleywine that had depth and taste and one I would not hesitate to ahve again.. Malts: Rahr Pilsner, Crisp Crystal, Crisp Munich. Hops: Northern Brewer and Crystal

Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 02/16/2012. This brew pours a hazy brown color with a medium beige head that recedes slowly. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted nuts, grassy hops and caramel. Full-bodied and smooth with flavors of doughy malt, caramel, hops and nuts. The finish is roasty with a lingering burnt malt aftertaste. Above average overall.

Tap at HDG. Dark brown beer with white head. Aroma is quite fruity smelling over the dark plummy malts, caramel and brown sugar. Sweet earthy/woody hop aroma. Sweet toasted malts. Flavour of toasted nuts and dried fruits. Whole wheat bready sweetness. Leans to sweet rather than hoppy.

2007 batch. muddy rusty red. heavy caramel malt nose. sweet, thick and chewy up front. oxidation most noticeable in the finish: syrupy, sticky malt extract / stale bread crust. yeast is a bit dirty and chalky.

My Bottom Line:
Caramelized base malts and subdued dried fruitiness colour the chewy body of this moderately-hopped, efficient Barley Wine.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the cloudy reddish-amber.
-The fruitiness recalls a berry mix.
-Alcohol is well positioned; present but amicable to the flavor profile.
-This is no world-stirring Barley Wine at this stage in its evolution, but it provides a pleasant sipping nonetheless.

DocLock (8311) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 21, 2007
Bottle from Capone’s. Hazy ruby pour with 1-finger tan head. Aroma of caramel malt, cherry, some oaky bourbony notes, and some earthy peaty notes. Tastes rich, very malty, with a heavy fig and cherry fruit bill, plus some cognac, cabernet, and peppery citrus notes. Gets a bit hot as it warms, and gains a spirity quality like a cognac/cabernet hybrid, as such.
