3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Silphium (2718) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - FEB 25, 2007
Bottle. Deep opaque brown body, medium tight buff head. Heavy cocoa aroma, sweet and somewhat syrupy, lactic. Round, creamy body, rich with chocolate, dry roast and coffee. Has that peculiar grape Dimetapp characteristic common to Arcadia beers, and the tart, syrupy lactic notes become overwhelming after awhile. Alcohol detectable but light. A tad cloying but all in all I liked it.
2 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 cheapdark (2957) - Quiptown & Central Valley, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 22, 2007
UPDATED: FEB 23, 2007 Dark tan head. On tap at the Trivia Pub in Moon. Pitch black color. Has the aroma of an imperial stout. Small hints of roasty bitter alcohol. This initially seems more palate able than Lion stout. Pretty ruff stuff. Typical imp stout impressive personality. I’m not sure what the difference is between imp stout and foreign stout, but they sure are closely related. Lots of bitterness, as expected after sampling the aroma. After awhile, I think I find myself rather accepting its intrusiveness. The head finally fades to a thin froth. Very little carbonation and the obnoxious excrescence is still with me. The creamy buttery qualities are overtaken by the medicinal tastes of this brew. The finish is a little creamy oily and it behaves like any other imp stout. I have yet to get used to the imp stout style. Roasty bitter malt finish hangs & lingers for a while. I don’t detect much if any cocoa in there.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 tennisjoel (1111) - Rochester, Minnesota, USA - FEB 21, 2007
A thick dark brown pour with a khaki colored creamy head. Roasted nuts, dark chocolate, and vanilla nose. Flavor is heavy malted milk, cocoa, very creamy and dessert like. This reminds me of Lion Stout. Good beer from a hit or miss brewer.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 joebrew (608) - Farewell Minny; Hello Puyallup, Washington, USA - FEB 19, 2007
On tap at the Happy Gnome. Pours a deep black. Nice roasted nose accent the dark cocoa powder aroma. Light hints of hops as well. Nice dark high cacao chocolate profile, but very subtle. There is a nice smokey character as well accented by a nice piney hop finish.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 badgerben (4116) - Blaine, Minnesota, USA - FEB 18, 2007
On tap at the Happy Gnome. Black color with a thin head. Subdued aroma of roasted and slightly burned malts. The taste is nothing like I expected... certainly some chocolate, but it’s very calm and in the back ground. Otherwise, it’s just a very dry, fairly bitter, roasted stout. Not bad, but not what I was thinking and hoping for.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 BDR (2534) - Roseville, Minnesota, USA - FEB 14, 2007
UPDATED: FEB 26, 2007 A nice cocoa aroma on this jet black beer. The body is the same but with a roasted characteristic to it. A big gulp revealed the molasses in one of the best stouts I’ve tried in a while.
2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 Pailhead (3435) - Plymouth, Michigan, USA - FEB 10, 2007
On tap: The aroma consists of cocoa powder with some light vinuous notes. It’s dark black with no transparency and a moderate beige head. The flavor starts with an excessive amount of cocoa that gives way to a very strong vinuous backbone. It finishes with a hint of sourness. The cocoa and vinuous flavors did not mesh well together at all for me, and the beer really began to wear on me about half way thru the glass.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Stine (1398) - St. Paul, Minnesota, USA - JAN 17, 2007
On tap at the Happy Gnome. Very dark brown but not quite black with a thickly creamy brown head. I got a lot of woody, mossy, earthy stuff in the aroma, with bits of chocolate and roast. The chocolate in this brew is like a well-mannered guest, never loud or too assertive. Acquiescent and pleasant. Tastes of mayan chocolate, red wine, currant, and some cream. Sort of strange...but really quite good, if you can get past the feeling that you’re ordering some kind of martini. I’ll admit my discomfort with the phrase "I’ll have a cocoa loco."
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 mds (2119) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 31, 2006
Draught. Dark brown with a small creamy brown head. The aroma is roasty coffee, chocolate, and toffee. The flavour has a lot of caramel and sugar in a medium body. Some raisin and coffee bitterness is also apparent. I found this to be weak in overall substance but it’s not bad for the most part.
Tasted at Ashley’s in Ann Arbor, MI on December 27, 2006.
