| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Feb 8, 2007 Pours oily pitch black with a very light tan head. Smells smoky, with hazelnut, dark malts, chocolate, andvery light coffee. Pretty mellow though. Light chocolate, burnt wood smokiness, and roasted malts were present in the taste. Pretty medium bodied and I usually like my imperial stouts so thick I can barely swallow. Very smooth though and I really enjoyed this one even though it was kind of light. mynameisjonas (206), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA

The smell has some alcohol and licorice. The pour was almost jet black with a tan thin head. The taste was all chocolate and alcohol with a little licorice and roasted malt. The aftertaste is nice and bitter. It warms the soul. I must try more of their offerings! muddyfeet (72), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA

Pours a dark black. At first I wanted to decsribe it oily but noticed that it thins out around the edges a bit. Wet lace that drips down into the glass. Nose is toffee and dark licorice.
Flavor is typical of a RIS. Heavy roasted malts balanced with an evergreen hoppiness. Bits of fresh coffee too. Also, getting some candies that are coming out as toffee and licorice. Medium to full body that thickens nicely as the beer warms. Really just a solid all-around example of the style. Definitely better options out there that are easily accessible but still a nice beer.
