A motol oil pour, opaque black fills the glass. A thin mocha head of tiny bubbles presides. Big upfront aroma of boozey espresso, with nuances of hops, fruit, and cocoa. Fruity espresso flavours go well with the boozey warming chocolate, and slightly bitter hops. Finish is strong sweet fruit, and a lingering bitterness. Another Gem from Styles! | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Mar 4, 2006 12 oz bottle, vintage 2005, via OhioDad. Pours an opaque black with a thin film of creamy chocolate brown head. Not unlike a fresh cup of espresso. Deep chocolate malt aroma with a moderate level of alcohol. Notes of licorice and a hint of butterscotch. Bitter chocolate and alcohol up front with a roasty and burnt malt bitter finish. Nice rounded flavor. The alcohol in the finish with the burnt malt actually hints toward a bourbon flavor to me. Full bodied with absolutely perfect super-fine carbonation. Texture is very soft and lightly oily. I really liked this, not in-your-face stuff, just a solid beer. Very good and worth seeking out. MI2CA (1266), Noblesville, Indiana, USA

Aroma is rich and chocolatey with deeper hints of dark fruits, mild roasted notes and some doughnutty/bready notes ohh and alcohol. Pour is gloppy and black with a thin rorschach test of a tan head. Full of dark baker’s chocolate in the fore, chalky and tobaccoy. Very old school English style Imperial Stout feeling. Acidic, but not very bitter. Some very burnt bouillion/beef stock notes and minor soy sauce notes. The classic cold weather sipper. Marc (477), Yokosuka, Japan

Started a little too efferessent and mellowed to a firm mouthfeel. Raisons, bakers chocolate, espresso, milk chocolate, and alcohon. Finishes with cadbury chocolate, burnt BBQ, herbs, and coffee beans. CharlesDarwin (1835), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA

Head of creamy tan. Light chocolate, candy and laundry detergent. Sharp figs and roasted pork in mole, with candied figs and light buttered toast. Sharp and piquant, with a hint of peppers and eggs. Roasted sourness is a little unsettling. Finish is oaky dry. Not amazing, but drinkable.
