| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 17, 2004 Dark, near-black body, with a full, lush, very fizzy head, toasty-brown, and effervescent.
Aroma, dark, with notes of anise and pepper right off, maple, treacle, motor oil and more, as we drink it in...molasses and tar...quite an accomplishment, already!
Taste: thick coating on the palate, dark, but bubbly, rich, and roasted, but ultimately thinnish compared to others that I like.Loaded with taste, but not enough to match the robust royalty among this style.
A bit underwhelming. Chocolatey, too, a touch, and it’s good, but not as good as we’d like. DaSilky1 (1970), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 16, 2004 full dark tan head atop burnt brown...acidic chocolate, raisin, port, & faint vanilla with an essence of alcohol...Roasty, coffee-ish flavors, not exactly imperial thick though, but a oily mouthfeel..heated alcohol, some subtle vanilla, still a bit thin for my tastes. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 16, 2004 This stout pours with a black body topped by a thick brown head with lots of lacing. The aroma is sweet yet slightly bitter and malty with notes of licorice and a nice roasted coffee note. The flavor is slightly sweet but mostly bitter, roasty, malty and slightly smokey with nice chocolate and coffee notes, as well as, plenty of licorice. Full bodied, although a little thin for an Imperial, and smooth. CapFlu (3481), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 10, 2004 (Bottle) Pours a medium, frothy, brown head and an opaque body. Large white chunks cover the bottom of the snifter. Strong nose of dark rum, wood barrel, roast coffee and bitter cocoa. Thin texture yet a multi-layed flavour: bitter chocolate, raspberries with good alcohol presence. This is a very fine Imperial Stout. Thanks to Raindog for making it available to me! | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 5, 2004 Good thick brown head on the black body. Aroma is strong of roasted malt and alcohol aroma, some sugar cane notes as well. The mouthfeel is a little abracive, but still rather viscous. The flavor is rather nice considering the ending bite which is a little excessive. Good beer, but not one of the best imperial stouts.
