| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 5, 2004 Good thick brown head on the black body. Aroma is strong of roasted malt and alcohol aroma, some sugar cane notes as well. The mouthfeel is a little abracive, but still rather viscous. The flavor is rather nice considering the ending bite which is a little excessive. Good beer, but not one of the best imperial stouts. csbosox (1086), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 16, 2005 Thanks to Mike/BBB63 for this beer. 12oz bottle. NB Worthy glass. 50.7°. Black as night, no tint on bottom or edges of glass, with a light brown head about a 1/4" high. Nice "legs" and laces like crazy. Aroma is bittersweet chocolate with buttermilk stirred in. Roast. Citrus peels. Really nice aroma. Flavor is sweet roasted malt with sweet and sour notes. Has a mild hops backing. There is also a touch of a mixture of bittersweet chocolate and coffee, but the flavor is mostly roasted malts. Finish is dry with a roasted malt, cooking chocolate, and a slightly hoppy. The beer has a nice mouthfeel, it coats the mouth and leaves a bitter tingle. barleyPops (1081), Quad-Cities, Illinois, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 1, 2005 acquired via trade with TAR. pours BLACK with a tan foamy head. I’ve never seen a bottle ooze foam like this one! poured about half the bottle into my .3L snifter and set the bottle down, then for several minutes the bottle looked like one of those snake fireworks things you would light as a kid, only in slow motion. it just kept oozing foam out of the top of the bottle. Oh yeah, back to the beer, sticky and sweet with a flavor of roasted malts, coffee, dark fruits and bittersweet chocolate. a bit too much carbonation for my taste, the carbonation seems to deract from the flavors in a way. Overall a nice IS, just a little different. Thanks Jeff! obguthr (1081), Poquoson, Virginia, USA

Relatively strong dark chocolate and molasses flavor. Smoky charcoal finish. Flavorful and drinkable.. Rather simple for an imp stout, but delicious. kmeves (1081), Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 16, 2008 Pours a thick black body with a large frothy dark brown head. Aroma is medium sweet chocolate, coffee and light cherry. Flavor is vinous, chocolate, roasty, some coffee, light raisin and other dark fruits. Full bodied, creamy texture. More hoppy finish. kujo9 (1079), North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 14/20 | Dec 31, 2006 12 oz bottle 2003: Pours w/ a lasting tan medium sized head and a dark, almost black body. I’m kind of suprised that I’ve not rated this before! I’ve had these for 3 years, and had not realized until now that I hadn’t rated it! Licorice, sherry, and raisiny dark fruit aromas laced w/ a touch of alcohol. Some port wine fruitiness as well w/ a hint of roasty, toasty, and chocolatey aromas. Well balanced beer w/ a drier finish. Some raisiny port wine like flavors w/a light roasty coffee and chocolate that is more present than in the aroma. A hint of buttery diacetyl adds to complexity of flavor, as well as still having a decent amount of bitterness from hops to balance the malt. Also a touch of alcohol. Aftertaste is dry, bitter from grains/hops, and lasting roasty coffee. Fuller medium body, light alcohol presence, lower medium carbonation, and lightly dry in the mouth. I personally think this beer has aged very well. I like the dark fruity characters it’s developed, as well as rounding out the dark grain and bitterness from hops that I seem to remember this beer having when young! | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 13, 2003 Updated: Sep 26, 2003Dark as night. Deep reddish brown more so than black. Thick brown head leaves sheets of lace at first then little spots for the rest of the glass. Roast coffee aroma with a sweet waft of alcohol. Creamy palate. Smooth with just a touch of carbonation. Raisiny sweetness up front. Brown sugar and molasses flavors practically melt in your mouth. Mellows nicely to a some coffee-like bitterness with hints of caramel. Long, finish with lingering burnt sugar and a dark chocolate flavors. This is easy drinking for a beer of such strength. The slight alcohol presence throughout is warm, welcoming, almost friendly.
When aged about six months, it takes on a more vinous character and a bit of sourness that mingles perfectly with the bitterness in the finish. Do yourself a favor and buy an extra bottle or two to cellar. Its character really improves with time.
