notalush (1971), Rawn-kawn-kohma, New York, USA May 14, 2008 2005 bottle from HailSquishFace - thanks, man! - had I realized the age of this bottle before I opened it, I might have saved it for something a bit less mundane than a Wednesday evening nightcap - oh, well - I’m normally not a fan of arcadia beers, but this one is a bit different - dark ruby, nearly black pour, with a soapy lace - aroma of burnt malts/sugars, tobacco, and a lot of red wine character - some noticeable alcohol underneath - low carbonation, but a kind of thin body for the style - almost tart red wine tannins up front, followed by some roasted malts, caramelized sugars, and ashy character - a bit dry in the finish, with some more wine-like qualities - not terribly complex, but interesting for an arcadia beer.
NachlamSie (1309), Tennessee, USA Jun 24, 2008 Bottle of the 2006 vintage. Pours thick, inky black with virtually no head at all. When held to the light, I can see some faint ruby spots around the edges. The aroma is sweet, leaning towards molasses, rum, ripe fruits. Blindfolded, I might not guess imperial stout by the aroma alone. The palate is fairly dense, though nothing too ridiculous and lacking any vigorous carbonation. Rich hints of brown sugar, rum, and sweet raisins are up front. The finish is almost meaty, maybe something like teriyaki beef jerky. This imperial stout is all about the sweet flavors, though it never becomes problematic or cloyingly sugary. I suppose it just lacks any real bitterness or roast that are commonly found in other imperial stouts. This pulls off a sweet, dessert-like beer without hurting my teeth. Not bad. jimhilt (1360), Bow, New Hampshire, USA Jun 24, 2008 Pours a one finger brown head that fades quickly to a thin layer leaving some lace. Totally black color. Light carbonation and heavy bodied. Coffee/chocolate nose. Flavor is a strong roasted/burnt coffee with hints of sweet chocolate. Decent imperial stout. $2.89 for a 12oz bottle from Yankee Spirits South Attleboro, Ma. 2007 vintage. railcat1 (482), Hammond, Indiana, USA Jun 23, 2008 This poured a dark black with little or no head and very sweet,I was surprised at how sweet it was with hints of chocolate and coffee and has aged well with a lot of roastyness to it.CHEERS! polomagnifico (389), Saginaw, Michigan, USA Jun 22, 2008 bottle. Pours with no head and aroma and flavor are way off. This must be a bad batch. Had this before and it was a completely different beer. Had to pour out. BOLTZ7555 (408), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Jun 21, 2008 Bottle is overly sugary and leaves not even a hint of a foamy head....nothin’. Still it is pitch black, possesses semi-sweet chocolate, fructose, and pure vanilla extract; all redeeming qualities. Moderate mouthfeel. Just a bit above average.
