3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottled. Poured deep, murky brown with a short creamy cap of deeper beige head. The aroma picked up deeply-roasted, almost burnt dark chocolate and coffee grounds, paired with a mild and complimentary campfire smoke character.. dusty, charred barley came through as well. The flavor began with lightly sour oak and dark fruity notes, with burnt dark chocolate and coffee not far behind.. nicely roasty with coffee and some dry herbal bitterness.. a bit tacky at the very back, but that didnít detract much. Medium-bodied and well-balanced on the palate.. I very much enjoyed the smoked malt presence. Very good porter!

Sampled at From The Vine beer tasting Jan 9th, 2004: Pours a dark brown color with a medium beige head that lingers. Not too much lacing going on. Nice amount of nuts and coffee in the aroma. A little more rich than a lot of Porters, with a good amount of coffee, malt, chocolate and hops in the flavor. The finish is nutty with a bit of molasses. I liked this one.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Medium brown appearance, light brown head quickly recedes to a cover. Mellow roasted caramel has a touch of anise to it. The hops are mellow, but give the impression of a lactic component rather than citric. Herbal, chocolatey in a milky fashion. Honest roastiness, earthy, oily, comfortable in mouth. Low carbonation, medium bodied, excellent mouthfeel, slightly oily and smooth, rich for a porter though Iím very surprised it is 7%. Good flavour balance, but as with most porters, Iím left on my appetite, I canít think of a time when Iíll crave for a porter.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle (12oz). Deep ruby-brown pour, small creamy tan head. Sweet roast malt aroma, light vanilla and cinnamon spice, dry yeast in abundance, hints of celery, with some chocolate as it warms. Taste - now thatís nice, what a porter should be - roast malt, bit of licorice, dry cocoa, light dry spicy yeast, herbal hops and some alcohol warmth as it warms, nice and lactic. Solid mid-range porter body, mild carbonation, hints of acidity and astringency in the mouthfeel, but mostly silky and malty - very, very good.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body
is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (milk chocolate, caramel, cookie, roasted grain/nuts), lightly hoppy (flowers, herbs), with a note of vanilla, hint of smoke. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, creamy/velvety texture, lively carbonation. Exquisite and unexpectedly rich, especially in the mouthfeel department. Outstanding flavor balance and a very enticing aroma. Elegant and classy. One of the best porters I've ever sampled.
