Travel to a time of brewer’s lore, when smoke was spelled "smoake," when dark beers held the collective hearts and mind of the people of merry old England. Believe it or not, back in the 1850s, Porter ruled the beer world, and no one brewed Porter like the brewers of London. Drawing their water from the Thames, blending old and new batches, and experimenting with new types of malt, Porter evolved throughout the years, and probably at one time held some substantial smoakiness. Arcadia’s London Porter draws on this rich historic tradition, but adds a few special twists to make it all our own. The flavor of London Porter is multi-layered, starting with a bold, pleasing sweetened coffee richness, which gives way to round and subtle smoke, much like a delicately smoked ham. Porcine sweetness is capped by a gloss of fig jam or cherry compote, fruity and complex. Faint pear and hay notes barely poke through, reminders that there are some delightful American Glacier hops under all the finery.

12 oz bottle. Pours to a deep brown to black color, with a rocky, white head, that fades, and a moderate carbonation. The nose on this beer excellent, with robust aromas dark chocolate, roasty, coffee, and hints of smoke. The palate is firm, with hearty and robust flavors of dark chocolate, roast, coffee, estery black currant, and light, salty/sooty smoke flavor. This beer finishes with more of those bold flavors up front, then ends with some good piney hop bitterness that lingers. Really a very robust and flavorful example of porter. Impressive. Would work well with hearty dishes, and hell, why not a good cigar?

Cask. Warmer and flat. A spectacular porter. Nice fruity yeast tones, rich cocoa abundance, just a world class porter.

Whoa. I’m rerating this up, after trying it head to head with porters from Great Divide and Bells. This thing absolutely explodes with flavour. The adventure starts sweet and chocolate to open, moves almost creamily through bittering roasts and smokes, and ends, no kidding, with lemon merangue (nice call Michael) at the roof and a campfire in the throat. I’ve had very inconsistant previous experiences with Arcadia, but this beer is marvelous.

UPDATED: JAN 14, 2004 Poured an almost opaque, black body. Nice tan head that diminishes to a thin line sticking to the glass. No lacing.
Smelled like roasted malts. Lots of roastiness in the aroma.
Perfectly balanced roasted malt/hop character. Smokiness was more complex in the flavor than aroma. Picked up both the roasted malt and coffee.
Nice, slight carbonation that picked the hops ever so slightly.
This is one of the best porters I've had in quite some time!

Incredible! Dark brown color with a nice beige head. The aroma was near perfect for a real porter...roasty, dark fruits...plums, raisins, and a gentle sourness to round things out. The flavor was full, big...roasted coffee, plums, raisins, smoked wood, and some sour milk. Medium thick consistency made this brew extremely enjoyable. I say this is the best American version of a traditional English porter.

Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (milk chocolate, caramel, cookie, roasted grain/nuts), lightly hoppy (flowers, herbs), with a note of vanilla, hint of smoke. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, creamy/velvety texture, lively carbonation. Exquisite and unexpectedly rich, especially in the mouthfeel department. Outstanding flavor balance and a very enticing aroma. Elegant and classy. One of the best porters I've ever sampled.

UPDATED: JUL 19, 2005 A really great aroma on this porter that I could sniff all day! Smokey, deep and rich with notes of firewood, pipe tobacco and salty bacon. Super smooth mouthfeel that is creamy and rich. The body is complex and loooong -starting with sugary chocolates before moving into more smokey notes. I can still taste it on my tongue a few minutes later. Truly grand.

Arcadia has made an outstanding porter. Good coffee, chocolate, and smoke aromas. Black, with some sediment in the bottle. Flavor of bitter chocolate and coffee, followed by sweet cherries. This beer is almost syrup.

12 oz bottle courtesy of SuIIy. Dark Dark brown pour with a tan head that faded to a ring about halfway through. Great aromas of mocha cappachino. Smoked roastiness in addition made flavor. Some hops on the finish, but not a lot. Mostly malt malt malt. Very tasty stuff.
