3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft sample at MBGWF 2011. Poured dark brown color with an average frothy off-white head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate smoke toasted malt and hop aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy bittersweet smoke flavor with a medium to heavy fruit sweet finish of moderate duration. My expectation where exceeded.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at HopCat, Grand Rapids. This beer was described as a "smoked rye pale ale;" I have also read it described as a "smoked imperial amber." Deep garnet body, medium creamy beige head. Wonderful nose of smoked peat, berries, and leafy, sprucy hops. The body lives up to the nose, with a classic soapy/herbal hops profile, berries, smoked peat, and a modestly bitter finish. The smoked flavors enhance, rather than dominate, the rich base beer. Excellent.
