Roggenberry is Arcadia’s melding of two classic European traditions, reinterpreted into an innovative American combination. Namely, we add the unique spiciness of malted rye to a traditional ale base, then we pile on hundreds of pounds of Michigan blueberries. The rye rounds out and builds up the malt character while adding those gentle spice aromatics, picking up piney hops along the way. Michigan blueberries bring a bright purple-pink hue, their fresh fruity aromas, and a slight tartness to quench and refresh. Once the whole package is assembled, expect a lean body, fluffy off-white-pink head, and a touch of haze. Arcadia’s house yeast adds points to the corners of the flavor and aroma, with more notes of fruit and spice. Truly a unique work of the brewer’s art, a melding of new and old traditions into something just a bit off-center.

Raspberry-like aroma. Deep wine-like red color. Winey-juicy, framboise-esqu flavor. A bit like juicy-juice. Notes: On Cask

Draft @ Hopcat in GR...sampled off of my wife’s glass. Pour was a bright, almost neon burgundy color with a large pinkish-purple head. Looks like it will be very sweet but ultimately eases that notion away. Nose is all wheat and blueberry with not much else to mention. Body is crisp, flavor has a very nice light wheat component with the blueberries complimenting nicely. A very good, simple, sessionable brew.

Sampled at the MBG Summerfest ’09. Burgundy pour with a fluffy pink head. Lots of fresh blueberries with some spice, sweet malts, and a faint peppery finish. The body is sticky, medium with lots of carbonation.

Dan’s Bachelor Party Extended Weekend Rating #33 of 90. Cask at Arcadia in Battle Creek. Pours bright raspberry red. Mild carbonation, fairly smooth, fruity clean finish. Refreshing to say the least...and I believe I did.

5th Annual MBG Winter Beer Festival, Grand Rapids. Deep purple body, thin off-white head. Biting grassy, fruity nose. Grainy, grassy, spicy body, with firm, tart blueberry, although not very sweet. Light bitter finish.

Draft to taster at Arcadia in Kalamazoo. Looks solid; a hazy amberish orange with white lacing. Smells of yeast and blueberries. Tastes like it smells, but more balanced, and with a bit of rye as well. Pleasant on the palate. A solid fruit ale.

Think unsoured Framboise. The color pinkish orange and cloudy. The smell has creamy malt elements, Mild sweet nose. The flavor is sweet with a fruitiness that I associate with raspberries (what does a Roggen Berry taste like?). Unlike a typical Framboise, there is no corresponding tartness to provide balance. Moderate body with a soft level of carbonation. Moderately sweet finish.
