On tap at Jac Cekolas, portage mi. Dark black pour, offwhite head that's dense and in appearance. Smells of sweet Carmel malts and creamy oats. Smooth mouth feel with little carbonation. Roasted Carmel in the flavor with a touch of bitter, licorice maybe. Finish is laden with spices, allspice or nutmeg. A little dry too. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap, poured into an imperial pint glass. The aroma is initially straight raisin, but this tones down a bit to allow some coffee notes to come through with a bit of a smoke and roasted character. It pours a dark, nearly opaque mahogany with w light tan, small suds, medium thin ring and wispy surface. A touch of lace is left on the glass. The creamy and smooth beer has a taste combination of medium sweet and light bitter with a soft fizz carbonation. The medium body contains notes of dry, dark fruit with coffee and a touch of milky caramel. There’s a herbal crescendo at the finish with a coffee ground grittiness. The aftertaste is light with hints of sweet fruit.

20oz pint at The Map Room pours a murky black with ruby edges and some very creamy, off white head. Nose has a very stouty nature to it, chocolate malt balls, some heavy bread notes, a little burnt chaff. Flavor would remind you of fresh St James Gate Guinness, creamy latte, chocolate malt balls, some toasted bread crust. Creamy finish.

Draft. Definitely dryer than the stypical example of the style, rich cocoa and coffee.

Draft. From notes. Chocolate and coffee, medium bodied. Good, but something weird in the aftertaste that I’m not a fan of.

Tap at the Map Room. Chicago. Poured a deep mahogany with a big frothy tan head. The aroma is weak cream caramel malt. The flavour is medium to weak bitter with a roasted malt, liqourice, spicy hop slightly watery palate. Nice and creamy / chewy but it lacks flavours and body.

UPDATED: AUG 28, 2014 Tap: Flimsy looking, brown-ish with crimson and ruby... this is a stout? Tight, java cop on tap with good retention, but it leaves almost no lacing behind. Aroma is acrid, astringent, and overly roasted malt, with tart dark fruit skins attacking hard... Yikes. Taste is a bit better, but not much. Bitter cocoa beans, bitter coffee grounds, astringent apple skins, sharp, and malt that is too over the top roasted. Carbonated to hell, prickly on the palate with a dry, scraping finish. This stuff was quite a disappointment. Gross.

On nitro tap. Pours dark brown with a thick tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, oatmeal, lactose, bitter chocolate. Flavor of light roasted malt, charred malt, bitter chocolate. Light, sweet but not overly sweet (just subtle sweetness from the chocolate and oatmeal malts), very smooth palate. Fairly basic but pleasant. 7/4/7/4/14 (3.6/5)
