sethdude (524), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Sep 5, 2008 Underrated. I’ve said it a thousand times before, but solid, traditional stouts are being overlooked due to the rise of imperial and double stouts, and people have developed an incredibly narrow and warped perception of what a stout is or should be. This one pours a deep black with a medium tan head. Aroma is somewhat faint, chocolate dominates with undertones of cherry and light tobacco. Flavor starts faint, but grows into a large burned toast/chocolate peak, tapering off to lighter chocolate notes, mild dark fruit, smoke, and a slightly earthy/grassy finish. Somewhat thin mouthfeel, though not unforgivably so. Good effort, good session beer. Please raters, lets stop comparing everything to Dark Lord.
jimhilt (1468), Bow, New Hampshire, USA Nov 20, 2008 Pours with a five-finger, brown head that fades slowly and leaves some lace. Color is black, no hint of ruby. Light carbonation and light-medium body. Nose is sweet and nutty. Smooth but on the thin side, flavor is roasted chocolate that finishes with a slight baker’s chocolate taste. Not nearly as dry as a Guinness. $2.10 for a 12oz bottle from Tully’s Beer and Wine Wells, Me.
bhensonb (3129), Woodland, California, USA Nov 3, 2008 Bottle from Vintage Cellar. Opaque brown/black color with a frothy tan head. Rather tart aroma of toasted malt; might be hop involved. Medium body with frothy carbonation. A little chocolate and coffee with the toasted malt, and there seems to be floral hop. Sort of an oscillation between stout and lighter, hoppier ale. Makes me think Belgian. Even slightly vinous. Quite unusual. Good, too. km62859 (2), OSOCDA, Michigan, USA does not count Oct 19, 2008 ummm honestly this tasted like a watered down porter but from my experience with Arcadia this is ok beer not too great of a beer from not too great of a brewery Rynoplasty (286), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Oct 12, 2008 Pours black with a big tan head. Aroma is roasted malts and what smells like lactose. Taste is rich, malty and sweet, with a slight bitterness. Really good. jjpm74 (3446), Connecticut, USA Oct 12, 2008 Bottle courtesy of sloth. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Smells of coffee, chocolate, brown sugar. Tastes of chocolate and peppery with a tarte finish.
