Roasted malts, creamed corn, soy, licorice and light campfire smokiness in the aroma. Opaque black body is topped by a low brown head that recedes to ring. Solventy plastic undertone to the roasty, salty flavour. Slick medium body with low carbonation. Sampled at the brewpub with Oakes, Rastacouere and Ungstrup.

2.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 Ungstrup (23917) - Oamaru, NEW ZEALAND - AUG 26, 2005
An opaque brown beer with a small lasting brown head. The aroma is sweet and very roasted, with notes of anise and chocolate mixing in. The flavor is a weird roasty and spicy one, including some off-notes of plastic. Good look - Good aroma - but awful flavor.
1.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 3/20 Rastacouere (5919) - Montréal, Quebec, CANADA - JUL 28, 2005
Almost black, lasting dark beige cover. Highly roasty, anise nose apparently felt good just to be hiding something because on the palate, it is immediately very sweet with potent anise notes that cannot dream of hiding the huge rubber and burnt popcorn finish. truly atrocious.
2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 Oakes (10184) - Gibsons, British Columbia, CANADA - JUL 16, 2005
Pretty close to black. Roasty aroma, a little bit nutty. Toasty, nutty flavour with a light roast bitterness and hints of sweet chocolate. Clean, but typically unadventurous.
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 MartinT (6340) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JUL 4, 2005
The Lure: Decent malt roastiness and black currant fruity sourness. Nothing spectacular again, but at least there’s something going on in this one.
The Festivities: Prevalent roasted malt bitterness intersects coffee beans and slowly-moving dark chocolate. Very light-bodied and easily drinkable for a stout, which is probably what they wanted. Their best of the day for me, and an okay introduction to stouts.
Transcendence: I just woke up.
