3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 CaptainCougar (6833) - Columbia, USA - NOV 18, 2007
Growler at the RBSG grand tasting on 6/23/07: Pours an oily opaque with dark brown edges and a thin ring of light tan head. Aroma of earthy sweet lightly roasted and smoky malts with a hint of butterscotch. Body starts a little thinner with some mild lightly sweet and earthy caramel malt toward a lightly smoky bittersweet finish with a touch of butterscotch complexity. An interesting stout.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 BückDich (5468) - McCall, Idaho, USA - OCT 5, 2007
RBSG 07 Minneapolis Grand Tasting: Murky dark brown, no head, light lacing. Nose of wood and barrel, light bourbon and soy sauce. The flavor is dry and woody, bourbon and light roast, some clean sweet chocolate. It’s ironic how so many beers to reek of diacetyl and this one actually advertises such and has none.

RBSG 07. Growler. A very candy nose that has some abv with it (now I know why). A coal black pour with no head or lace. A deep hard coffee flavor and a diacetyl flavor that could be called butterscotch. A bit thin with no carbonation. I’m surprised that it was 15%.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 13/20 hopscotch (7522) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - JUL 8, 2007
Growler... RBSG 07... Pitch black ale with no head. I’m able to pull no butterscotch out of the nose, but I’m getting loads of vanilla, sourmash and strong notes of chocolate. Woodsy, chocolaty flavor with a mild whisky burn. Full-bodied with an ultra-creamy mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Burnt, medium bitter finish with a touch of ethanol warmth. As I enter this rating, I see the ABV for this beer is around 15%. Wow, didn’t taste like it. Nice job, guys, however, where was all that butterscotch I was looking forward to?
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Skyview (4859) - Papoose Jct, Minnesota, USA - JUL 8, 2007
Sampled at the RBSG ’07 from growler, compliments of brewfiend. Pours a clear dark brown brew with no head except a thin bubble ring on the glass edge. Aroma of distinct butterscotch, caramel & toffee, with a touch of light creamed coffee. Taste is light to medium body, slick and smooth finish. Slight caramel aftertaste. The 15% alcohol seems to be high on the potent scale but it does has a slight alcohol warmth.
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 bu11zeye (10165) - Frisco (Dallas), Texas, USA - JUL 7, 2007
(Growler) Pours a brown body with virtually no head. Aroma of butterscotch, nuts, and roastiness. Flavor of toffee, oak, and some chocolate. Flavors are too separated and do not blend that well. Abv well hidden.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 scraff (2120) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - JUL 4, 2007
RBSG 2007 Grand Tasting - Dark brownish black, zero head. Nose was faint with alcohol, butterscotch, and coffee. Light flavor of butterscotch and coffee that ended with some soft bitter alcohol warmth. Light bodied and oily, soft carbonation, lightly bittersweet finish. My hope was high for this one, but expectations were not nearly met. They can’t all be gems...

RBSG 2007 Grand Tasting
Thanks Brewfiend for bringing this unique brew to the tasting. Sweet initial flavor. Undercarbonated, yet not terribly. Something just slightly off here. Didn’t taste like it was 15% ABV. Didn’t get any of the JD whiskey flavor either. Interesting attempt. Not my favorite.
