Russian Imperial Stout made with smoked jalapeños from McClendon Select and smoked over Arizona mesquite wood, all aged on cocoa nibs (Papa New Guinea and Belize). Well, well. What sits in front of you, this thick, monstrous, viscous … this is the Russian Imperial Stout. This is the crème de la crème of the beer world. The empress of Russia couldn’t get enough of it. This being the US of freaking A makes this the free world’s style, thus, the American Presidential nomenclature. Catherine the Great would have sat in the Hermitage and asked why jalapeños smoked over Arizona mesquite were used. We say this to CTG: This is ’Merica and this is Wilderness. This is OUR stout. Enjoy — we poured our hearts and souls into this one!

UPDATED: MAY 5, 2014 Jet black with a light brown head. Wow. This is incredible. The nose is incredible. A mix of chocolate, smoked jalapeños, rich roasted malt, incredible cocoa nibs...and the flavor. Well the 11% is hidden incredibly well. The flavor is just the right amount of sweetness and roast. Tons of cocoa, molasses notes, just a perfect amount of smoke...an amazing stout.

Draft - Tons of dark roast and some ash. Jet black with a rich brown head. Ash and roast dominate, with nice woody notes to follow. Rich and very thick. Nice.

On tap at RateBeer Best. It pours a very dark brown color with a brown head. The aroma is very nutty with some walnut brownie, cocoa and roast. The flavor is the same. Full with rich walnut brownie and has a nice soft feel on the palate. A good one.

Draught @ CBC 2015. Pours viscous black with a small mocha head that leaves some thick lacing and trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty and spicy with roasted malts, dark bread, burnt caramel, dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, smoked chilli, cinnamon, leather, moist soil and hints of alcohol. Taste is sweet, bitter, malty and spicy. Mouthfeel is soft, round, tiny atringent, slightly spicy hot and near full bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with roasted malts, caramel, toffee, dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, smoked chilli, cinnamon, allspice, moist soil and hints of alcohol. Good but a bit unbalanced in the spice.

Draft at Buxton Taphouse in Derbyshire. Really. In a brandy snifter, in the UK. I am not making this up. And while I may not be 100% sober, I am NOT hallucinating. Opaque deep brown color, bright beige head with good retention. Aroma of burnt cocoa, pepper. Taste is smooth rich cocoa powder and chocolate milk, very light pepper heat at the finish. Rich body. A welcome change after being golden aled to death.

Tap at Magic Rock’s Rainbow Project launch. Dark brown/black. Ring of brown head. Chocolatey aroma. Big roastiness. Nice heat from the chili. Adds a different dimension to the taste. The base stout probably isn’t the most complex or interesting, but there’s enough there to support it. Good.

Keg at Beavertown. Black, small foamy brown head. Aroma is coffee, vanilla and chocolate. Body is medium, smooth, soft carbonation. Taste is semisweet coffee, roast malts, spice with a dry finish. Pretty nice. This is apparently smoked, but I didn’t pick up much of that.

Keg at Rainbow event at Beavertown, London. it pours a dark brown color with small mocha head. Aroma is deep intense roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate, vanilla, ice cream, light wood. Taste is medium sweet and lightly roasty bitter with notes of cocoa, espresso, wood, vanilla, chocolate fondue, marsh mellow. Bold with good carbonation. Overall, excellent, although chilies are not really evident. Might be a good thing though

On keg at Magic Rock Tap, Rainbow Project 2015. Pretty nice, but not earth shattering. Not thin, but a little on the thin side for what it should be like I think. Dark brown and slightly opaque, sort of burnt. Minimal head. Green pepper, a little chili. Quite bitter and a little chalky mouthfeel.
