COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. Also available in pasteurised bottle (as Light Ale).
Formerly called BB or John Arkell Bitter, this is our lighter beer, described as "Fine quaffable session bitter" in the 'Real Ale Drinker's Almanac'. Made from 92% pale malt, 6% crystal malt and 2% sugar, it has a light, hoppy aroma and is a thirst-quenching beer with a slightly tart taste and a dry hop finish. 2B is a low gravity drinking beer which is nevertheless full of flavour. It has been brewed constantly since the early 1900s and was Arkell's most popular brew until it was overtaken by 3B in the 1970s. 2B is also available in bottles when it is known simply as Light Ale.

Cask Conditioned at The Thames Head, Gloucs. A pale gold colour with thick head. Nice smooth start with a little sweet malt followed by a dry bitter hop finish. Overall a thin session bitter with little alcohol kick.

Cask, Burton Fest 07. Deep gold with a small head. Aromas are caramel and pear with sulphur. Some spices. Flavours are light caramel with peppery notes. Sulphur, soap and dry biscuit. Some citrus. OK.

Cask at the Victoria, Eastleach, Gloucs. I have always viewed this as one of the few remaining west country boys’ bitters. Light aroma, decent hops. A real thirst-quencher on a hot summer’s day.

Cask Conditioned & on hand pump at the Derby CAMRA beer festival on 10/02/05. Mid amber broen colour. Clean easy drinking ale, nothing exciting about this though...

Cask conditioned at the Head of Steam, Euston, London. Gold coloured. Dry, sulphuric ’ordinary’. Slight hop character, medium bitter. Indistinctive beer. The 2.8/5 is somewhat generous.

Canterbury Beer Festival, with SilkTork. ST had this one down as a light mild. However, I thought it tasted like a watered down session bitter. A bit wishy washy and not really to my taste. I much prefer the 3B. Cask (gravity dispense).

UPDATED: FEB 11, 2011 Cask conditioned - Head of Steam Euston Station. A mid brown beer with a light mild type flavour being sweetish and caramel-like. It is an okay beer but I found it a tad cloying. The aroma is sweet and malty. Score 2.7

UPDATED: JUL 26, 2004 Canterbury Fest. A famous beer that has to be tried. Nice touch of sulphur mixed with fruit. A light, refreshing Mild, with just enough character to keep it interesting. [2.8]
Bright bottled. Very soft mouthfeel. Toffee and caramel notes. It's a very decent session ale, and probably one of the better beers that can be had at this strength.... It really would be useful to have the ability to sort beers by strength.

This beer shows the potential of the English mild. Side-by-side with the Arkells 3B, slightly lighter golden color, but with a nice creamy head. Really enjoyable mild flavors, nutty, vanilla, almost plum-like. An English soul beer or session bitter. (on tap, The Friar, an Arkells pub, Oxford)
