5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20 Srumping (1) - - DEC 30, 2011 does not count
This is beer is well received where ever it is found. It has stood the test of time when other more modern brews have come and gone. It is a reflection of the quality and traditional method of brewing still undertaken at Arkells Brewery.
The smooth drinkable flavour of the beer hides the deep after taste, and the impact of it’s 4% abv. Many a new drinker has found it to be a more powerful brew than it’s strength implies. If well kept this is a superb beer, still brewed in a traditional fashion.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Nuffield (3083) - Roseville, Minnesota, USA - JUL 6, 2003
Side-by-side with the Arkells 2B, slightly darker with a deep red-copper color and a good, rich head. Slightly more acidic and less creamy, but the same nutty flavor with the introduction of some very rich caramel, chocolate, and light roasted coffee notes (all very subtled). A lesson in the possibilities of English cask bitter. (on tap, The Friar, an Arkells pub, Oxford)
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 chriso (7063) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - MAR 9, 2004
Mid amber colour. Nutty malt dominates the aroma and palate, but with a good ration of balancing hop bite. The bitterness consolidates on the finish. Rather good and definitely better than I was expecting. Silk Tork's earlier rating rather highlights the problems with rating decent cask and dodgy canned versions of the same beer side by side. Handpump, Head of Steam, Euston, London NW1.

Cask at Bedford Arms, Bedford. Amber with a small white head. Malt aroma. Taste has some malt but more sourness. A curious hint of chocolate is followed by a pleasant bitterness. Liked this.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 WhiteStar (37) - Swindon, ENGLAND - MAY 6, 2004
Cask Conditioned. A decent enough lad for my local brew. Now, I’m not biased - I like to play away from home more often than not, but this is tasty enough for a bitter. A bit darker than your average with some grubby bits from the Autumn leaves and the acorns underfoot.
