From notes. First reviewed 8/22/2011. On tap at the Stone Tap Takeover at Acre. Served in a snifter. My snifter is full of a recognizable cherry mahogany beer with a nice beige cap. Webs of lace stick to the lace and the head retains well, like the normal Bastard. The aroma is full of caramel malt, with grapefruit and other assorted citrus smelling hops, pine needles, and just a touch of oak and bourbon. The taste starts out sweet. Caramelized grapefruit impart a sweet and hoppy flavor right away. A bit of brown sugar, prickly pine, some oak, and bourbon toward the end lead into a bitter finish. The pine hops and bourbon combine to give off a fusel bitter flavor that is not very good and lingers through the finish. The body is slightly above medium, with mostly creamy smooth carbonation. A little bit sticky up front and after each sip, with an alcohol inspired dryness in the middle. This is the second Stone beer I like a little bit less after aging it in bourbon barrels. The residual pine hop presence doesn’t work well with the bourbon for me.

draft at haymarket awhile back. Pours dull amber off white head. Nose vanilla whiskey, caramel, cotton candy, flavors vanilla whiskey caramel cotton candy sorta follows the same dry bitter palate some booze and dry hop finish. one of the rare occasions where just oak chipping is better than an actual barrel.

VTHopHead (1511) - Barre, Vermont, USA - NOV 11, 2011
Draft at the Three Penny Taproom - ABV of this version was 10.5% Pours a very dark brown in color with a thick, creamy light tan head that produced some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is heavy with dark roasted malts, caramel and bourbon/vanilla. Flavor is of dark malts, some dark fruits, a bit of pine hops and lots of bourbon/vanilla. The beer is a very well blended mix of flavors with nothing really dominating... they all muddle to produce a very tasty beer. Decent palate. A little boozy at the end. some lingering sweetness. Really good!

Dogbrick (7891) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - AUG 24, 2011
Sample on Day 3 of the Aces & Ales Strong Beer Festival on 08/14/2011. Pours dark brown with amber highlights and a medium light beige head that dissipates steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of dark malt, bourbon and hops. Medium body with a boozy quality and flavors of oak, bready malt, caramel and vanilla. Underlying hoppiness throughout. The finish is woody with a bourbon aftertaste. Above average overall.

On tap; pour is murky dark brown/amber with a modest fine bubbled beige head that retains fairly well. Light, spotty lacing in this snifter. Dark fruits, bourbon, and caramel on the nose. Ill admit, the flavor profile is a little light bodied. Anyway, the flavor profile is a little bitter from the piney hop profile. Dark fruits, bourbon, cocoa, and caramel round it out. This is a decent barrel aged option, for sure.
