4.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
The bottle I had poured dark, with a thick tan head and funky aroma... it tasted almost exactly like Three Floyds Alpha King until the end, wherein a certain tanginess set in.

UPDATED: DEC 8, 2004 Re-rate
Maybe there is something to the mystique of the 3L bottle. Ok, no there isn’t, but three years of aging make this a deeper, more complete beer
The good - strong
The bad - like funky pond water.
This "black sheep" in the Stone family is good in all other respects (besides wretched aroma). If you follow the technique of plugging your nose with one hand, you will notice a great heavy malt, heavy hop barleywine styled champion. The taste of sherry is up front, with a loooong dry finish. Rating this lower than the norm must mean that "I’m not worthy"!

4.4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 19/20
A near perfect beer! A foamy, hop-heavy aroma. Definitely an aggressive ale in all ways-- from the name, to the bottle artwork- from the appearance to the smell to the finish. A nice honey-molasses flavor slickly balances out the heavy hops presence. Definitely an ass-kicker of a beer! Strong, aggressive yet velvety finish. Sooooo good!

UPDATED: OCT 10, 2009 I’m not at all what you would call a hop-head so I figured this beer would be too aggressive for me, but I was wrong... Wonderful "beery" aroma, beautiful brown-copper color, and flavor was pleasently hoppy. YUMMY!

1.3 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 3/20
This wretched beer is an amatuer-hour, bad home brew, ill-conceived bottle of mess. Outside its bigger, dumber brother "double bastard", it's perhaps top the crap-heap of overrated beers. How does a brewery that makes the greatest IPA ever made bottle trash like this?

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Reddish brown body with very low carbonation and a thin head that is gone is a matter of seconds. Lace is also quite minimal, and the beer has very still appearance in general. Aroma is on the sweetish side with flowery hops and malts that smell like honey. I can also detect a fair bit of grain on the nose with hints on vanilla and oak. Malt profile is very Scottish with sweet caramel, plum, cherry, vanilla, and a bit of smoked grain. Hops are quite detectable, and become more pronounced as the beer warms some. The hops add some dryness to the aftertaste due to their spicy, woody character, but they are not really bitter. As the beer gets warmer still, the malts that had been subdued by the hops make a big comeback with very fruity esters. Silky smooth mouthfeel with a nicely warming alcohol content. A sipping beer to wind down a stressful day at work, as the experience is totally relaxing and mellow.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: JAN 2, 2005 Cool looking mohogany color with a light beige head. Strong roasted malt nose with something sweet (molasses?) Kind of sweet/tart taste. Loads of refreshing lemony hops with a great balance of sweet, sweet maltiness. Good stuff!

UPDATED: NOV 10, 2004 An unbalanced version to its brother the DBA. Great flavors but not as balanced as other stone beer. That being said this is definitly a top notch beer, another great Stone offering

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours a hazy mahogany with a thin off white head.
The aroma is citric hops, grapefruit, and dried fruits, dates and raisins.
Taste is big with slick piney hops, citrus fruit also some sweet caramel malt.
Moutfeel is full and heavy but perfect for the style.
Despite being apparently different styles, the entire time I drank this I was comparing it to Alpha King. Three Floyds and Stone I see as two premiere microbreweries in high demand. AB and AK are the two flagship brews so I subconciously was measuring the two against each other. While I really enjoyed this and would definitely buy it again, AK is better IMO.

Dark copper color. Hops are front and center in the nose, and let me know what I'm about to put in my mouth is going to be rather bitter! Sure enough, the nose knew. After a full body of carmel flavors with a touch of smoke, the hops jump all over you. Though quite intense, The hops truly save this from being way too malty for my taste.
