This is an aggressive beer. You probably wonít like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth.

Pours medium brown or copper, cloudy with a decent head. Aroma is fairly strong and somewhat hoppy, though not truly distinguishable. Initial taste is somewhat bitter with definite hop flavor, but still maintains a good balance with malt. Body is fairly full with good carbonation. For the more refined beer drinker, this tastes like it could be a good regular anytime beer. Overall, the taste is somewhat similar to Stoneís IPA, though not as "clean". Also, it wasnít as "aggressive" as the hype prepared me for. Perhaps Iím already becoming desensitized...

UPDATED: JAN 5, 2005 This is one of the first beers that I tried when I turned 21. A truly excellent beer. Pours out dark and with a healthy head, depending on your pour style. Has definite hints of citrus, coffee, alcohol, and a whole bunch of other delicious things. It packs a nice punch that a lot of other beers just lack. The overall flavor is bitter and slightly sour with a very refreshing sweet aftertaste. The marketing on this beer is as aggressive as itís flavor. A great beer.

Drinking this to fast has proved to make my stomach turn so i suggest you relax and sip on this. Not in the sense of its alcohol content just the contents that make up its body. Flavor consists of orange, honey and notes of raisens and is hard to detect much more for me. The whole bottle label and versus match this brew well making it even more stronger of a American atrong ale

Dark amber-brown in colour topped by a thick, light brown head. A good amount of lace was left behind from the top to the bottom of the glass. This is an aggressively hopped ale with a sharp bitter hop taste, balanced by a sweet and fruity malt flavor. Malty, bitter and peppery this is an aggressive in your face beer.

UPDATED: OCT 21, 2004 Dark crimson coloration, thick'n'rich'n'cloudy, under a perfunctory whitish head. Aroma: a big hit of juicy fruit, deep, dark ones, grapes and berries and cherries and more, a rich elixir..definitely got the barleywine thing going on, zesty, spicy, loaded with flavor...'bout time I taste, eh? Big, chewy, grabbiness on the palate, full and thick, powerful, and omnipresent, digs in and in, climbs and clambers about the senses, not trying to dominate, but doing it anyway, through virtue of the fullness of flavor...zing, zing, zing, again, I sing, this is deliciousness pressed into service and doing double-time, brothers,...Lordy, it's loveliness, indeed, thick and full on the palate, wow, rich and tasty, sets the senses a'spin, leaves the soul reeling...mine is, I luxuriate in the pleasures of this brew, and they are aplenty! I'm drooling of the day I can visit San Diego and try it fresh on-tap, maybe other versions, the Oak-Aged, as well? As it is, this is a supreme brew, a just king, who wisely judges the imbibers from his throne...if thou art not worthy, tarry not 'round these vessels, seek a softer, sadder brew for you..let only those who can claim worthiness hoist a chalice of this finest ale! Got to be one†of America's best barleywines, bar none!!! I could rant on some more, for the bottle is not yet finished, but let it be known, that this ale has powers over me, bewitches and bewilders, and all in the best sense, for I leave the normal earthly realm to visit sublimer planes, all courtesy of this San Diego-bourne bottle! Good Lordy-Lou! I am sent, in the most sensational way, lifted, aloft, delivered, dropped beyond the heavens into a metaphysical stratosphere beyond human reckoning... Yes, I proclaim it "good"....and will merely melt and luxuriate at the rest of the consumption of this rare delicacy...I envy you Cali types who can snort this back with the ease of an ordinary day....

Rating no# 100. Pours a dark brown with a thick tan head. Aromas of hops (pine, grapefruit) dominate with some malt in background. Yep itís aggressive alright, massive piney, grapefruit hops and plenty of malts, caramel as well, thick mouthfeel. The alcohol is well hidden, great lacing. Nice beer!

By far the most Complex and interesting beer I have ever come across. I had Drank the Ruination right before this one so my tongue was still a little puckered. I will have to drink another next week and gave a more suited review

Nice crisp, clean citrusy aroma, mainly grapefruit, with some hops. Pours deep brown with a fluffy beige head that left good lacing. Strong hoppy flavor with definite grapefruit flavor. Very citrusy with subtle, almost non-existent, sweetness. Good palate but the grapefruit is very prominent with bitter finish. Seems better than it did 6 years ago.

Complex brew...definite burnt malt/caramel flavor with a hoppy/citrus finish. Kind of a war of the taste buds, between the malt and hops. Unfortunately my only chance to try this beer was at a temperature slightly colder than 70 degrees or so. Iím going to re-rate this one once I get a nice cold sample.
