This is an aggressive beer. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth.

I am not one who usually likes an overhopped beer, but this bastard is just plain good! Gives a very nice first impression, but alcohol taste may be overwhelming for some wimps!

UPDATED: APR 28, 2004 Nice amber red color, hoopy aroma and taste. After reading the bottle, i expected a much more oppressive beer, but instead found one that actually had pretty good balance. Very intense hoppiness right off the bat, but then it mellows nicely at the end. Good beer!

OK, no real milestone for a 650th beer but still good to be able to try one of these bastards. In Australia there is an order of the old bastard which requires every member to greet one another as one, or buy a shout. No one is arrogant here, just bastards. Anyway this bastard decided to wait until the very last beer of the night to present his credentials. Arrogant indeed given that this was the 23rd of the night. Lucky he isn't a subtle bastard as we would have thought the finesse had been bastardised by numbers 1 to 22. Looks fabulous in the glass and so it scores very well for that. It has a pine needle type of hop resin nose with a hint of caramel. The taste is quite an experience, yep sure is bitter but for my palate seems to be a little unbalanced. Slighty OTT, as is expected of one so sure of himself.

A great pour. Nice deep copper hue. Hint of hops in the smell, but a stronger taste of hops in the drink. Great aftertaste which stays long and a solid alcoholic punch. Knocked me on my ass.

Can't get too far in beer life without rating the bastard eh? I really like this beer... I pretty much always have a bottle or 3 in my fridge. It pours a deep red color with an off white head of medium size. Head dissipated too quickly, and seems to leave little lacing. Pfeh, who cares, let's get to the good stuff. Aroma is pretty hoppy but strong alcohol and sweet crystal malts. Taste is much the same! The malt complexity is pretty impressive and hits right away, but with plenty of hop bitterness to keep things in line. Mouthfeel may be a touch too carbonated, but the effervensance does serve to move the flavor around quite a bit. Finishes dry and clean with a good alcohol taste and burn lingering. Great beer Greg, thanks :) (note, I've been drinking this at ~55 degrees lately, really brings out the malt tastes more, give it a shot if you're getting nothing but hops from the bastard!)

Very nice beer. I love to drink and brew hoppy beers and this is that and more.

UPDATED: JUN 2, 2004 Pours a clear reddish brown, nice ligh brown head. A lot of hops on my first whiff, a little alcohol. Amazingly intense flavor! Hops, hops, and some alcohol. Bitterness is prevalent, but fits in with the whole picture quite well. Very strong and intense experience.

Like most Stones, prevalent hoppy taste. Mouth feel is thinner than one would imagine given aroma and appearance. Nice fruit taste to offset a good bitter experience.

The ale’s appearance was clear and dark crimson brown with a thin head. It had a hoppy, but sweet scent to it. The taste was overwhelmed by hops. To me it was very bitter and all of the hops overpowered some of the other less prevalent sweet flavors. The mouthfeel wasn’t anything special, but it was fine. This wouldn’t be my first choice for this style of beer. Although drinkable, I wouldn’t drink much of this at one time. Overall I was a little disappointed; I didn’t feel it lived up to its arrogant label.
