Well, how would I put this... The beerís name is perfect. Itís an Arrogant Ale allright. The pour was nice. The head was beautifully thick. The color, a dark cherry was suprisingly murky, not as clear as I hoped. Dark but not clear up to the light. The first sip took me by suprise. It was strong, rough and bitter. Not my favorite. But after the first sip or two the mellow under tones smoothened it out. I should have continued to simply drink this strong ale alone but I had it with dinner. BIG MISTAKE. I ate it with chicken and vegatables and it was almost undrinkable. It made the food seem too sweet and the food made it seem too bitter. Too bitter you say? Is that possible? YES. I would say keep this beer away from food. It was hard to finish the rest of the beautifuly illustrated bottle with my dinner. Too bad. I love beer with my food.

A very masculine beer, fiery hops and an aggressive finish. Much of its appeal is in the devil may care branding and the fierce taste.

Love the hoppy aspect of this beer, but have to say that with all the hype, Iím surprised itís not *more*. Have had (and made) more complex and tasty homebrew IPAís, which is the category that this beer really shold be in, though I have to admit that the character and consitency of this beer, from itís chocolatey clearness to the delightfully tan head and pretty lacing would be hard to duplicate in a homebrew. Good beer, but as with a lot of microbrews, too many bandwagoneers hopping on to laud itís greatness. Thereís a lot of microbreweries in the US making comparable or better beers without receiving the accolades.

....iím catching up on my reviews tonight. when i first had this back in í98.. i didnít like it. yet, back in í98 i didnít like many craft beers other than sierra nevada pale ale and anchor steam. now... iím a hop-head and craft beer lover. i have this often on draft and from the bastard bomber. great color.. deep amber.. reddish.. great pour.. perfect head.. looks awesome sitting there staring at you. you definitely get some grapefruit and raisins in there.. wow! this is such a dynamic beer. hops and malt are really well balanced i think.... iím worthy.

My favorite beer to date! I've found that it's flavor varies significantly with temperature. It should not be served as cold as lagers and as Americans are used to having beers served. At that temperature, it's is incredibly hoppy, perhaps overpoweringly so. Yet, as the beer warms, it sweetens in your mouth, filling your tongue with many flavors, both sweet and bitter at the same time. Its complex palate inspires you to drink more, just to figure out what those flavors are... A true tragedy that this beer is not widely available on the east coast!

UPDATED: JUL 19, 2003 This beer is a powerful beer lover's delight. Hops a plenty, and major flavor. Still, it somewhat reminded me of a stout, with a hint of chocolate. I sincerely wish that Stone Brewing would start distributing more beers in the Austin, TX area, because if this is any indication of their line of brews, they really have a handle on what it takes to make a really excellent Ale.

Very nice strong ale. I must admit I poured out my first bottle...too strong. I came back for seconds though...and it has really won me over! Not for the weak beer lover ;-)
