3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: AUG 11, 2008 Hoppy nose and it is caramelly and chocolaty with a roasted coffee aftertaste. Gorgeous fruity/bitter Chinook interplay. Straightforward, but challenging enough, ASA.

For a long time I was wary of trying this beer. While neither a beer-drinking novice, or a lightweight ( my favorite style, after all, is Imperial stout ) I haven't sampled many strong ales and the, "You're Not Worthy" slogan which surrounds this particlar brew made it seem all the more intimidating. Call me a reverse sexist but as a female I doubt very much the Stone Brewing Co. had me in mind as a potential customer. It wasn't so much I was worried the ale would be too strong for me as that I just plain wouldn't like it.
The beer pours to a rich dark amber color with a foamy beige head which leaves a fair amount of lacing. The smell is intensely astringent and citrusy. The taste was reminicent of unsweetened grapefruit juice with a light overtone of crisp hop bitterness. The 7.2% alcohol content was only slightly detectable, and the bitterness was not overpowering. I was pleasantly surprised by this beer. I might even buy it again.

Yikes! Talk about hops! When this brew was poured into my glass, it poured with a large tan head that was fairly long lasting and there were fine-large bubbles. The body hue was dark brown and there was a little bit of carbonation observed. The first whiff of this brew reminded me of pineapples. From the first taste to the last taste of this brew it was constantly a strong bitter tasting brew that I did not enjoy very much. The taste of this brew stays around for a while.

Of all the hoppier beers I've tried this is the only one I've really liked.

Nice dark brown color, good head. Not bad, but way overrated. From the reviews I expected alot more. Too much malt for me.

UPDATED: SEP 17, 2004 Rerate 09-17-04. still from a bottle. the hidden power of the bastard is apparent to me, i can now appreciate the overwhelming flavor of sweet rich caramel from the malts and the tangy hop attack on the finish. i only discovered this by accident when i had another taste at my fantasy football draft. this is so much better when it has a chance to breath and warm, that said it still ain't my favorite
Original rating 6-26-04 original rating 2.4.Bottle. nice pour. mahogany color with a tan head that laces down the glass. aroma is interesting with a cinnamon smell. I had previously tried this a few years back, and i did not like it. i am pleased that it tastes better than i remebered, but it still has a flavor that i don’t enjoy. i like the malt flavor, but the hops in this do not agree with me. leaves an unpleasant taste. i guess this is too strong for me. I’m not worthy.

Best name and persona in the biz. I had this on tap at the GingerMan in NYC. A hearty pint hit the spot. Hops were the first thing that I noticed, but over time I noticed much more. I will have to rerate when I try a bottle as I cannot describe this properly right now.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Complex brew...definite burnt malt/caramel flavor with a hoppy/citrus finish. Kind of a war of the taste buds, between the malt and hops. Unfortunately my only chance to try this beer was at a temperature slightly colder than 70 degrees or so. I’m going to re-rate this one once I get a nice cold sample.

Dark brown color, medium tan head. Slightly sour aroma. Dark malts and hops flavor collide and make it slightly sharp and astringent. Bitter finish. Decent enough, but I was expecting more.

(draft) Roasty, malty, hoppy, weirdness. I’d like this more without the bitter finish.
