3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
1 pt. 6 fl. oz. bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7.2%. Dark brown to ruby colour, big to moderate light tan head. Nice but surprisingly moderate aroma of floral and fruity hops. "Arrogance" shows its face in the flavour, with a distinct and aggressive hoppy bitterness from start to finish. There is a certain malty sweetness in the background, but I cannot say the Arrogant Bastard belongs in the "well balanced" category. It is probably not meant to belong there. Perhaps I am "not worthy" after all? My wife said she liked it, though. Spooky ...

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: JUL 28, 2009 After trying a lot of these, bottled and on tap, Iím rerating it quite a bit lower. If the beer is very fresh, itís basically a heavily hoppy IPA... too hoppy for my tastes. As it ages about 3 months, it mellows and becomes very interesting and good. Then is seems to go funky or bad within another couple months. When itís good, itís great, but itís way too inconsistent for me to rate it so high.

3.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours reddish brown and dark. Caramel malts and dominating hopping. I donít think I could drink this easily without a couple of other beers or liquor in me already, but as it was, this went down with a palatable flavor profile. Still though I often wonder if even strong ale needs to be this bitter and how extremely bitter, high IBU ales get rated so highly again and again.

Tap @ Brennans. Murky mahogany, tan head. Nose is a big bitter green hop herbalness, lots of malt, brown sugar, cocoa, dark fruits & caramel. Flavor is big caramel, harsh bitterness, borderline burnt sugar. Fruit/grapeyness comes forward in the finish with a slightly harsh hop bitterness and cocoa malt. That harshness grows as the pint continues.

Pours a dark brown with a reddish tint. Head is generous and is slow to dissipate. Nice lacing. Aroma is very subtle. Hints of malt and..."plastic." Taste is complex. The taste changes as it passes down the old gullet. First itís crisp and bubbly with a very light malty flavor then turns very bitter as it goes down....Oh, and it "burps" nice later on.... Very easy drinking and pleasurable!

Tap @ The White Horse:
A big nicotine stained head. A lightly cheesy aroma and rich cheesy flavour. An excellent texture/carbonation ratio. Totally drinkable.

Pours a nice dark brown/amber. Medium pour produces a good two-finger head of lightly tan foam. Retention is very good and lacing is slightly impressive.
Nice, big caramely malt notes. Citrus hops notes, mostly grapefruit. Very bready.
For such a íbigí beer, I expected a bigger nose.
Starts with a kiss of sweet caramel and brown sugar on top of some dark fruits. Just before you can get into that, though, it blasts you with the bitter bite of big citrusy hops.
Needs to be a touch more balanced. The hops overpower everything else.
Good body. Itís at the higher end of medium, on the scale. Almost gets into full-bodied, but not quite.
Itís very good, but could be so much better with more balance. Not my favorite from Stone, although it is their flagship brew.

What an insanely unique bitter beer. Herbal hoppiness combines with burnt wood, fruit skins, and malty goodness in a way that lingers on the palate for hours. My maximum intake is two pints.

Man oh man, I really loved drinking this bottle down. I like the aroma a whole lot, a dark, sweet smell without being overpowering. Unfortunately I just drank it out of the bottle, never got to pour this one so I really donít know about head details or color, but it is determinately a dark brew. The taste is a great one, a very bitter, slightly(very slightly)chocolate taste, finishing a tiny bit fruity. An acquired taste, but one worth experiencing. And the bottle is a great read.

Not for guzzling. This is a substantial beer, Thin but persistent head. Great malty flavor with stong american hop balance. Lots of caramel in the finish. No off flavors noted.
