This is an aggressive beer. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth.

(bottle) Not sure where to rate this. This is one where it goes over the top... but I can't say that is bad. But I guess I take a few points off the palate, but give them back on the flavor. That pretty much sums it up.

UPDATED: FEB 26, 2004 (Props to Linc for giving me the chance to try this)A hop bomb. No subtle use of hops to be found here. Very sharp hoppy aroma (grapefruit/pine), with some raisins. The flavour is pretty full on, hops everywhere, quite bitter and very sharp and a bit sickly, particularly as you work your way through it, the amount of hops throws the balance out a bit. Pretty much everything i was expecting, a massive hop bomb. Did i mention it was hoppy? RE-RATE: i like it a little better this time. Toasty raisiny caramelly malts happening, with a huge hit of piney, citric bitterness in the finish, very hoppy. A bit salty, with some boiled vegetables. Certainly is aggressive. (original rating 3.3)

This brew pours a large head of light brown fine to medium sized bubbles and a cloudy dark brown body. It has a pineapple like aroma. Wow what a plate! It really give you a wake up call on the first sip. Lot's of flavor, strong initial bite, very complex with notes of spice roasted malt, and of course lots of hops. It leaves a stong afterbite too where the alcohol content shows itself.

Amber color with a white head. The taste is sweet with a complex finish of bitter and aromatic hops.

Dark amber in color. Difficult to see through in a glass. Head is dark cream color. Taste is very full with the carmel and malt being much more noticeable to me than the hops. Heavy beer. Alcohol content also seems noticeable to me. I would need to drink this with food.

This beer isn't joking, most people will not like it because its very bitter. Very nice shade of brown with a regular head. If you like something that will kick you in the balls then this is the beer for you.

UPDATED: SEP 26, 2004 yow! dark, scottish like ale. burning hops and resin, surprisingly a coco flavored characteristic comes out. interesting, strong, yet not my brew. a good novelty, however. quite fun! UPDATE 9/26/04: you know, i cannot say that i have anything to change for my rating. it's just a good beer. and yes, it's actually a bit arrogant. there's a huge syrupy alcoholic burn within the -- quite long -- aftertaste. it's a bit of a tea, isn't it?

Creamy, root-beer float like head. Heavy, hoppy aroma. Goes well with a burger with jalapeno and worcestershire sauce. A little chewy on the malt. I'd have again, one of Stone's better brews.

Maybe there is something to the mystique of the 3L bottle. Ok, no there isn’t, but three years of aging make this a deeper, more complete beer
Aroma:
The good - strong
The bad - like funky pond water.
<P> This "black sheep" in the Stone family is good in all other respects (besides wretched aroma). If you follow the technique of plugging your nose with one hand, you will notice a great heavy malt, heavy hop barleywine styled champion. The taste of sherry is up front, with a loooong dry finish. Rating this lower than the norm must mean that "I’m not worthy"!

Dark dark amber ruby with a thin tan thick head, quickly discipating. The nose is crisp with perfume hops, the taste is stron perfume hops, starts sweet, middle acidic grapefruit, and ends with a spicy tangy hops. The body is tingly and crisp. Its good, but not as sweet as Id like.
