4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 phaleslu (3530) - Saint Louis, USA - OCT 20, 2009
Draft at the brewpub. Must have been the second version because I went in October 2009. Pours very deep red-brown, almost black, with a thick, creamy tan head that laces the glass. Aroma of molasses, game, raisins and other dark fruits, dark malts, vegetal notes, and brown sugar. Flavor is rich, sweet, roasty, and gamey, with molasses, dark fruits, roasted malts, herbal notes, hops, and caramel. Full bodied, complex, well-balanced, and flavorful. This one’s very tasty.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Ungstrup (23917) - Oamaru, NEW ZEALAND - MAR 26, 2011
Draft. A nut-brown beer with a red shine under a brown head. The aroma has notes of alcohol, nuts, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of nuts, wood, and over ripe fruits, leading to a dry woody finish.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 DuffMan (4418) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - JUN 22, 2009
Sampled on tap at the brewpub in Arrowtown. I’m assuming I had "version 2" since chronologically I must have missed version 1. Deep mahogany red-brown, thick off-white head. Very rich aromas of molasses and French Canadian mince pie (which consists of currents, sultanas, and raisins with a brown sugar sauce baked in a sweet crust). Very fruity palate consisting of stewed fruits, sweet brown bread, molasses, toffee. Rich and full-bodied, very very good-- my favourite of the lot from this highly promising new microbrewery!
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 jimthechap (786) - Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND - JUN 1, 2009
COMPLETELY different aroma to version one. Vegetal, black malt and honey. Same dark malt and herbaceous flavours; like eating a handful of grass the taste of chlorophyll is prominent (like the heatheriness you find in single malts). Coffee and herbs on the finish. This beer dares you to drink it. I’d like to see how this beer develops during bottle conditioning. Maybe even vintaged?
