This is a small brewery I really want to like - seemingly innovative beers from my home county and a down-to-earth twitter presence which suggests a passion for their work despite stupid hour days and child-rearing restrictions; I was therefore disappointed to dislike iBeer, the first of theirs that I’ve tried; anyway, on to Monkey, which is an amber beer with a thin white head; sweetish fruity aroma; a really good full, ripe citrus flavour - orange (mainly), grapefruit, then a fair whack of piney hops which recede nice and slowly in the long finish; soft carbonation, but far from flat (unlike my iBeer); it’s excellent - would like to give this a go on cask, might break the 4 barrier.

Cask at the Pig’s Ear BF 2010. Ruby-gold pour with a light film. Rich malts, toast and dark, citrus hops in the aroma. Medium to big sweetness, with some strawberry and citrus, nice malt tones, earthy bitters. Light to medium in body with fine carbonation. Good citrus and light earth hops in the finish, along with some very faint roasty, bready malts. Overall a solid beer.

Pigs Ear. Clear and somewhat dark gold beer. Semi dry palate. Sweet light toffee malt. Well balanced with some piney bitter hops. Really well joined up. Lovely sweet and bitter vibe going on. Semi dry finish. Could drink loads of this.

Bottle from Darts Farm. Hazy orange-golden colour, creamy off-white head. Aroma and flavour of Victoria plums on a malty base with shy citrusy hints. Very good and moreish!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Attractive golden color with an off-white head. The nose is quite sweet, with citrus and grassy notes. There’s a woodiness to this nose that reminds of of a saison. The taste is nicely hoppy, with some spicy black pepper notes, the finish is long and sharp. The mouthfeel’s medium, the carbonation lively. Monkey IPA’s a nice, hop-forward brew that’s just a little grizzled around the edges.

Cloudy ale, with decent yeast sediments. Very fruity aroma, lovely hop taste. Melon, grapefruit and lime peel. Well worth a taste.

Cask-conditioned at the Royal Oak, Bath 13/06/09. Amber with a tight white head that left rings down the glass. Aroma of spicy hops, oranges and sweet malts. Flavour had more of the same with some pine resin, prickly mouth feel and a long dry finish. The "monkey" in question is Chris, the manager of the Royal Oak, who appears on the pump clip. Very good.

Cask conditioned at The Bell, Bath. Gold with white head. Malty beer with heavy dry grapefruit notes, definitely hoppy, agree with resinous, sharp throughout, really quite pleasant.
