Cask at the Moon Under Water (JDW), Watford. Dark ruby in colour with a thin tan head; sweet and rich chocolate malt aroma; the body is thiiner than I expected; the flavour is dry, milky chocolate at first, then sweeter; leading to a gently bitter finish, leaving an aftertaste of chocolate and coffee grounds.

Cask conditioned at a Wetherspoons. Dark brown, ruby hue, off white head. Sweetish, treacle dark malt notes interspersed with a fleshy fruit note. Touches of roasted husk and just a hint of bitterness in the close. Its quite reasonable.

Cask-conditioned at the Crosse Keys (JDW), London 4/02/10. dark brown in colour with a decent streak of red and off-white head. sweetish, caramel aroma with some dark fruit and almonds. Flavour of doughy malts, chocolate, a touch of roastiness and hoppy, dry finish. Very good.

Figure of Eight (JDW), Broad St, Brum, Sat night. Jesus. Deep ruby with a thin beige slick. Milky coffee aroma, same flava; coffee granules, dusty choc. Dabs of bitterness and Twiglet. Dull, but quite possibly demolished by the shots of 62.8% Wray Nephew overproof Sas insisted on making us neck. One to revisit.

Cask/handpump at the Sir Michael Balcon (Wetherspoons) in Ealing. Pours a bright chestnut with a thin beige head. Hints of malt, port-wine and a little coffee on the nose. Full bodied with notes of dried plums, demerara, roast nuts, mocha and a sharp dry-bitter aftertaste. Very good balance of dry versus malty - and very more-ish!

A Mes rate: Gravicask at Nottingham Beer Fest.
Almost translucent chestnut with a thin off white head. Aroma of brown sugar, black coffe and berry fruits on a malty base. Flavour follows on well with the malt and coffee coming upfront. A light tangy sourness and a light hoppy finish top it off nicely.

Cask gravity at Nottingham BF 2007. Very dark brown, thick lasting head. Good mix of malt, milk choc and hop. Toasty without being over the top. Very drinkable, good smooth, but toasty mouthfeel. Nice strong dark beer.
