4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 worldbeertaste (1126) - Lancashire, - NOV 13, 2012Deep dark brown almost black if not for the red tint. Frothy, lacy, disappearing, fizzy, beige head. Strong smell of caramel sweetness with malt, light roasted coffee, raisins and cherry. Lovely. Medium very oily body with mild carbonation. The taste is very rich, full of raisins, figs, cherry and an overall toffee, malt smoothness with a bitter cola, chocolate, licorice, and vanilla finish. Very sweet overall and a lasting bitterness. Very balanced and that leaves the mouth filled with dessert. An excellent Old Ale.

[Bottle from Pallant of Arundel] Pours deep brown-black with a moderate beige head. Slight fizz. Smells of coffee and treacle. Treacle, figs, raisins and sweet black coffee in the first taste, balanced against a little bit of bitter chocolate. There’s a hint of very English dusty farmyard hops in there too. Vanilla ice cream and a slight oaky sourness come through in the finish. May be a bit sweet and sticky for some, but for me there was just enough bitterness and carbonation to cut through it. A lovely beer.

Bottle. Very malty in the aroma, plenty of malts and chocolate in the taste. A real dark brown colour with no head at all, with a bitter taste to finish.

Bottle picked up at Vale Brewery shop, Brill, Bucks. Had this in field at Towersey Festival, Oxon, w/e 20th-25th August 08 Pours dark brown with plenty of chocolate on the nose, quite malty and a little sweet at times with big push of molassess, still I rather enjoyed this beer.
