2.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 SilkTork (4736) - Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom, - OCT 17, 2005
UPDATED: APR 14, 2011 Oct, 2005 Bottle. Sainsbury. Sussex Gold. Cold Filtered. Interesting mix of English hops and Cascade hops. The mix doesn’t work for me - the earthy and dusty English hops (Fuggles and Goldings) seem to muddle and dirty the clean, citric American hop. First Gold would have achieved this taste effect much cleaner. The Best Before is July next year but already there is an oxidized and cardboardy flavour here. Carbonation is pleasantly low for an artificially carbonated beer. Malt is lightly sweet like a fine malt cake with a touch of ginger. Pleasant beer which doesn’t do too well filtered. [2.8]
April, 2011 Tesco. An attractive little drink. It takes some of the characteristics of the lager style golden ales, and some of the characteristics of the APA golden ale. The intention appears to deliver a clean, satisfying, dry session beer with some fragrance. It’s certainly clean and dry, and there are those who like that, though I prefer a little more character and sweetness in my beer. The malt does come through, with caramel, orange, honey and vanilla notes, and it’s pleasant enough. The hops are pleasant - not overbearing, just providing interest and additional flavour with some gently fragrant lavender notes. It’s actually not a bad beer - clean, flavoursome, with the malt and hops working well together. It’s not quite my thing, but I wouldn’t turn it away. [3.0]

[500ml bottle from Maureen & Dave - cheers!] Dirty dark gold with a large foaming white head and slight to moderate carbonation. Decent rich mouthfeel. Peaches up front, straw throughout, and some lemon in the finish. On the dry side, but little bitterness. A decent bitter that exceeded my expectations.

Bottled. Golden as expected with a whitish head. A bit of straw and cardboard amongst the orangey hops in the nose. Decent citrus amd grassy in the mouth amongst a bit of rubber. Would be far better filtered than pasteurised as this no doubt started off a fairly decent beer.
