3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 downender (4380) - Bristol, - FEB 18, 2010
Cask-conditioned at the Inn on the Green, Bristol 18/02/10. Near black with a hint of red and decent, off-white head. Sweetish aroma of milk chocolate, coffee and dark forest fruits. Flavour had a sweet edge, with caramel, fruit & nut chocolate and a hint of roastiness in the finish. Very drinkable.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 tombyars (1102) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - SEP 30, 2011
Tasted this at the Troon Beer Festival in October 2005. Cask, handpump dispense. Dull black in colour with a thin creamy buff head. Roast grain notes in the short aroma. Thin mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malts give a burnt toast flavour through the black malt. Slight hint of dry raisin fruit. Dusty hop flowers give a slight bitterness to the aftertaste. Finish is dry and slightly woody. An ok session mild.

Cask with Time in the stockbridge tap ... deep brown red ... thin off white head ... woody toffee malt nose ... huge chocolate ... some toffee amlts ... soft juicy and creamy.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 RPillsbury (115) - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, ENGLAND - AUG 7, 2009
Cask at the GBBF 2009. A beer that’s deep copper in colour with a lovely sweet malty aroma. Roasted malt and treacle flavours, but it’s a bit too sweet. A decent mild but, considering it’s a SIBA champion, it should be better.
3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 RichardW (925) - Carlisle, Cumbria, ENGLAND - JUL 24, 2009
Cask, Hawkshead Beerfest. Fairly dark red ale, medium roast in the aroma, fiarly dry and quite a short finish. For a SIBA champion, this was actually a bit disappointing.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 DruncanVeasey (5136) - NUNEATON, Blue Square Prem, Warwickshire, ENGLAND - FEB 23, 2009
Cask handpull, SIBA Champions Fest 09, The Canalhouse, Nottingham. Pale ruby with a rim of froth. Despite the ’low hop rate’, some distinct hop cone mustiness, coffee again, boiled veg, boiled sweets, black cherry. Too much buttery cherry and Battenberg for me at 3.7. Coffee, currant, tiny puff of roast. Sticky with dark fruit and gentle resins. Ends up a pretty decent with some sneaking hop character, but a bit tired and unexciting.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Ethereal (2399) - Los Angeles, California, USA - JAN 1, 2009
Cask at the Eastbourne Beer Festival, 9th Oct 2008. Dark brown. Great aroma and flavour - pillowy marzipan, dark fruit and a little bit of chocolate bitterness along with the usual roasted notes. A very impressive mild.

Cask at Hop Farm Beer Festival: Quite thin in the mouth and also quite light in colour for a mild. Still very nice though. Sweet and creamy with a little chocolate.

(Cask at Wenlock Arms, London, 8 Aug 2008) Brown colour with ruby hints, frothy beige head. Roasted nose with notes of freshly ground coffee, chocolate and dried fruit. Roasted taste with dark fruit, coffee and prunes. Moderate bitterness. Rather thin body, but a tasty mild.
