COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle & can: Pasteurised.
Ingredients: Dark roasted malt; hops; rice; maize; Asahi’s pure cultured yeast.
Japan’s favourite dark beer. Brewed in Osaka, Asahi Black is made from three different roasted malts. This gives it a rich, nutty flavour and makes it incredibly smooth-drinking. Unlike other, more bitter dark beers and stouts, it’s brewed in a process called bottom fermentation, which gives it a subtle, sweet edge and smooth 5% abv.

Dark brown with a small tan head. Smells like molasses with a bit of smoke. Taste like brown sugar and a little coffee. This is a bit too sweet for me and I find it unbalanced. Does not fit my palate, but it is not a bad brew.

Pours black. Thin head. Nice aroma, roasted malt and caramel. Tastes like soy sauce. Not very good. Actually pretty offensive.

Bottle at Cole’s. Maudite glass. Pours clear brown, with a tawny hue. 1-finger pale tan head, weak lacing. Nose is soy, mushroom, salt. Flavours of soy, mushroom, tart black fruit, some coffee, some Worcestershire, graphite and plums. Identifiable as a Japanese beer, but interesting....

Slightly sweet brew with hints of spice and malt. Lighter than I expected.

Not so much aroma, Dark brown color, almost no head at all, medium carbonation and a mild roasted flavor. Kind of disappointing beer.

Can in Tokyo. Massively disappointing after Yebisu Black. Colour is very dark brown, fair amount of carbonation. Nose is not strong. Bit nutty, possibly some roasted stuff but getting a bit too much metallic too. Taste is really lacking in roasted grain or deeper flavours. It’s like a macro lager with just a tiny touch of nuttiness. Bland as possible for a dark beer.

Lagerboy (293) - British Columbia, CANADA - JAN 10, 2012
Clear dark brown with an amber hue that shines thru, receding mocha head. Slight sweet roasted malt aroma. Light sweet roasty malt taste, some caramel and brown sugar. Light bodied, low hopped, softly carbed. Thin sweet finish. LF (Lagerboy Friendly)

01.05.2011 - Houston, TX Bottle By for one of the best Asian beers I have had! More complex and more to offer to the palate than I am used to with Asian beers.
