BückDich (4785), McCall, Idaho, USA Jul 4, 2006 Bottle: Dark black, off white head, nice lacing. Nose is lightly sweet, some metal and roast, light fruit and juice. The falvor is thin, some astringent roast and metallic hop bitterness. A bit of coffee and chocolate, the finish is light and thin, decent schwarz. scraff (1921), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Jun 13, 2006 Crimsony brown, thin tan creamy head. Nose held soft notes of mild roasted chocolate and toast. Flavor held similar characteristics with more light roasty notes, touches of nuttiness, and a very soft late hop tone. Light bodied and watery, medium carbonation, roasty, lightly bitter finish. The key word throughout is certainly light. Not terrible, but I just recommend sticking to the Ichiban for sushi… grat (433), ST. Louis, Missouri, USA Jun 2, 2006 Light black colored beer. Amber and brown around the edges. Light khaki colored head that is quite resilient. Nose is zero on this beer. Nothing. Smells like...carbonated malt beverage. Nothing subtle nothing. Almost smells like seltzer water. Flavors aren’t much better. Winey malts at first. Dried plums...maybe. Fades into a cardboard like softness and carbonation is rather fare. Mouthfeel is ok. All in all not worth the $2.50 I paid for one.
Saarlander (1577), Saarlouis, Germany Jun 1, 2006 Roasted malts, light chocolate hints, pretty drinkable, not overpowering, abit on the watery side, but still an ok drink. johninmelb (688), Bristol, Gloucestershire, England Apr 23, 2006 Smell is almost nonexistant, but what there is is a little sour. Deep brown with a dark cream, persistant head and good lace. The flavour is nice with a little of the rice coming through in a good way (unlike, say, budweiser), and the finish is fresh if thin. All in all, it’s drinkable, but too flavourless and too thin. KAggie97 (2406), Ugly, Hot, and Humid Spring, Texas, USA Apr 15, 2006 Bottle
Pours a nice black with a lovely cream colored head. Aroma is chocolate and a tinge of roasted malt. Flavor follows suit with a slightly coppery aftertaste that keeps this from being a great beer. Palate is watery. Not bad, but the aftertaste ruins it. beerguy101 (3861), Newark, California, USA Apr 1, 2006 This schwarzbier pours a deep brown color from a 12oz bottle. Medium to large sized white foamy head. Aroma is slightly coffee, roasted malt with a touch of cola. A medium to light bodied schwarzbier. Malts are roasty and slightly cola-ish. It’s a touch thin and watery, which helps accentuate the cola like flavors. The lively carbonation helps with that as well. Very drinkable beer. Mouthfeel is a touch thin. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly sweet. DeepBlack (387), Derby, Derbyshire, England Apr 1, 2006 Bottle from "Beers of Europe" nr Kings Lynn in Norfolk, England.
Very dark redish brown in colour. Thick bubbly head to begin with, which dwindles after a while. Not bad, but not much to it for a 5%er, a bit on the thin side. Slightly dry in the after-taste. Not bad, if I was stuck in Japan with no Real Ale I’d be happy to drink a few of these.
