Commercial Description:
Bottle & can: Pasteurised.
Ingredients: Dark roasted malt; hops; rice; maize; Asahi’s pure cultured yeast.
Japan’s favourite dark beer. Brewed in Osaka, Asahi Black is made from three different roasted malts. This gives it a rich, nutty flavour and makes it incredibly smooth-drinking. Unlike other, more bitter dark beers and stouts, it’s brewed in a process called bottom fermentation, which gives it a subtle, sweet edge and smooth 5% abv.

Nice looking black beer with a good sized tan head. Aroma has sweet roasted malts and some fruit. Taste is caramel, malt, perhaps some chocolate. Smooth medium mouthfeel. Very interesting, nice and drinkable beer.

Soy sauce colored with a tan head. Aroma of coffee and malts, but surprisingly faint. Tatse is similar to the aroma, with a disappearing finish. It’s decent.

Well balanced at the start, but fades quickly and finishes bitter-sweet. Too thin bodied when compared to the other versions of the stye that I have sampled to-date.

Looks like what would be called a brown ale in the US. Not much head but OK lacing. American lager aroma with some toffee, coffee and a bit of wet cardboard. Tastes like it smells, with good body, some bitterness and a slightly acrid finish. A small amount of hop flavor. Not bad.

Bottld. Redish black(?). Rather sourish; vinegar. Really crisp and fresh. Porter-ish with a late and smoked bitterness.

11.2 oz bottle - Whip-In Liquors, Austin, Tx. Pours a deep dark purple to medium black with tight khaki colored head. Nice aroma of roasted coffee. Roasted java accents spill over to the flavor. Slight bitterness rounds it out nicely with some faint chocolate notes in there as well. Mouthfeel is about right for a Schwarzbier. Overall, fairly decent, nice to see a departure from the norm for a Japanese beer.

Black in colour. Aromas are coffee, sour blackberry and (almosr) aniseed. Flavours are earthy and thin with a roast character. Not very malty, devoid of taste. Rice and maize don’t help I suspect.
