2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 Marc (485) - Yokosuka, JAPAN - NOV 2, 2002
Light burnt coffee in the nose and a loose white head that places a brief cameo appearance. Not too sure about the taste, slightly acrid, definitly some dark malts in there but a thinness more accountable to a lager. Very dry with a lingering maltiness that haunts the palate for a while.

Nice light ale. Mostly malt flavors.

Can in Kyoto, Japan. I was excited to find this, since I knew it had good scores on this site. A dark brown with a light brown dissipating head. The aroma had malt and caramel. It had a medium body with a malt flavor.

Surprisingly malty and ale-like. I expected a thinner brew from the Japanese, who supposedly are fond of the schwarzbier style. It’s a tad roasty and is pretty fizzy. Beige head. Not bad, not great.

Looks good pouring from the bottle, but the head is very small and slight, less than I expected. It’s also a little too carbonated for my taste, at least in a schwarzbier. The taste is pleasant, though nothing special. It reminds me of several beers combined, most of which I don’t want combined. It’s like a dark lager, if that makes any sense. I like the slight sweetness and acidity of this one, but the acidity turns to a sour aftertaste. Overall, considering what I’d heard about this, I’m a little disappointed, but perhaps I’m just not a fan of this style. Reminds me of a sour cola more than anything else.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 Ernest (5182) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - APR 5, 2002
Head is initially average sized, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted grain, caramel), with notes of licorice and cola. Flavor is lightly sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly bitter, lightly acidic. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. The flavor and body are a bit light, but the aroma is nice (though I would wager some rice lurks within), decent flavor balance, and it’s quite clean and quaffable.

it has a nice nose, smooth approach to the throat and a fluid, charming manner going down. Although hard to find at times, it is well worth the search.

Sort of like a ’lager-stout,’ or a ’stout-lager.’ Take your pick. But it is good. It looks nice and has a nice brown head. It is a little on the thin side, don’t drink this if you are having a craving for a stout or strong porter. Otherwise, go for it.

A pleasant dark brew. Not as heavy as, say, Guinness. More like a light dark beer.

Close to black in appearence. Chocolate aroam with hints of coffee beans. The mouth feel is especially smooth and mellow, yet on the thin side. The flavour is dominated by chocolate. Compared to Kulmbacher’s schwarzebier (the only German example of the style that I have tried), Asahi’s has a better appearence and aroma, but a weaker flavour.
