COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle & can: Pasteurised.
Ingredients: Dark roasted malt; hops; rice; maize; Asahi’s pure cultured yeast.
Japan’s favourite dark beer. Brewed in Osaka, Asahi Black is made from three different roasted malts. This gives it a rich, nutty flavour and makes it incredibly smooth-drinking. Unlike other, more bitter dark beers and stouts, it’s brewed in a process called bottom fermentation, which gives it a subtle, sweet edge and smooth 5% abv.

Bottle from Tesco, Inverness.
Black with ruby edges, frothy white head which dissipates to thin layer.
Aroma is light with dark malts, bit of roasted malts, molasses, light marmite.
Taste of light roast malt, cereals, hint of chocolate, slight cardboard.
Palate - thin body, low carb, dry finish with dark malts and cereals.
For a pasteurised macro lager I was quite impressed with this - the roast malts do show through here with the hint of plain chocolate

The beer pours a dark brownish-red color with a white head. The aroma is a mix of toffee with some dark fruit added. The flavor is similar. I get a lot of toffee and hazelnut notes, with some dark fruit thrown in. Light mouthfeel and medium carbonation. I don’t have much to say about the beer because there is not a whole lot going on. A decent, easy drinker but nothing too exciting.

Much akin to a Guinness Foreign Extra Stout after a lap-band procedure! Very thin and watery in the light-bodied brew. This is my first dark Japanese brew to try and I must say that they have quite a ways to go to make this stout competitive with other brews in its style. It’s not a bad brew but for the style it just needs a lot more ‘oooomph’!

Not bad for a Japanese beer. Asahi’s attempt at black leaves a lot to be desired in the dark beer category though. Only a touch of bitterness and no real character beyond just plain ’bitter’. One of the best things to drink in your average 7-11 in Taiwan or Japan, although I’ll take kirin dark over it if I can find the stuff.

Pours dark brown with a decent light beige head. Aroma of molasses, tofffee, and roasted malt. The taste is pretty much the same, roasty and a little sweet. Medium bodied. A bit of a light stout, as the flavors and aroma are about right, but the body is thin. Not bad at all, and definitely the best beer I’ve seen around a sushi restaurant.
