Commercial Description:
Bottle & can: Pasteurised.
Ingredients: Dark roasted malt; hops; rice; maize; Asahi’s pure cultured yeast.
Japan’s favourite dark beer. Brewed in Osaka, Asahi Black is made from three different roasted malts. This gives it a rich, nutty flavour and makes it incredibly smooth-drinking. Unlike other, more bitter dark beers and stouts, it’s brewed in a process called bottom fermentation, which gives it a subtle, sweet edge and smooth 5% abv.

Bottle from Brewery Creek, Vancouver, B.C. Poured with a nice, light tan head, but not very much carbonation. A clear, dark ruby color in the light. Low, roasted malt aroma with a hint of caramel. Moderate roasted malt flavor with bitter-chocolate and a medium-low bitterness. Slow, dry aftertaste that lingers with a subtle roastiness. A clean black lager that, in spite of it being Japanese, would pair well with blackened Cajun food, Mexican mole, cold cuts on black rye bread, or chargrilled steaks.

Dark brown, clear, moderate tan cap. Rich burnt malt aroma. Very roasty, surprisingly malty palate, hints of scorched coffee beans. Medium mouthfeel, dry finish. A pleasant surprise!

Bottled. Ruby colour, mediumsized beige head. Aroma is metal, roasted malts and some hints of metal. Flavour is roasted malts, some dark riped fruits and some hints of rice. Not very exciting.

Pretty unremarkable schwarzbier. Not too dark roasted a flavor paired with an average bodied beer. Still OK.

Appearance: Very dark brown, basically black. Nice amount of head. Aroma: Burnt and roasted malt. Caramel? Metallic? Taste: Again burnt and roasted malt. Malty aftertaste. Info: 334ml bottle, 2/9-2007

bottle. poured dark brown with no head. Dark roasty malt aroma and flavor. I like the style, but this is a pretty weak schwarzbeir in my opinion.

Rich caramel malts with some light roast and a touch of sulfur in the nose. Clear, deep amber-brown coloured body is topped by a decent tan head that recedes to a lasting cover with some nice lacing. Light roasty character is perceptible above the smooth somewhat sweet, nutty malt flavour. Bitterness is quite restrained. Medium light body with somewhat strong carbonation that attacks the front of the tongue. Tulip glass. Cellar temperature. Bottle (marked "Munich-type", BB 08-11, Brewery Creek, Apr-08).

Pours a a near-pitch black with a good thick head which doesn’t stick around long. Aroma is slightly odd - black sesame, sweet, light caramel. Tastes similar - again, black sesame, lightly toasty, some diacetyl and very light and sweet finish. Slightly under-carbonated, thin body with a touch of milkiness. Not terrible, I kinda like the black sesame thing, but there must be better Japanese beer out there...
