COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle & can: Pasteurised.
Ingredients: Dark roasted malt; hops; rice; maize; Asahi’s pure cultured yeast.
Japan’s favourite dark beer. Brewed in Osaka, Asahi Black is made from three different roasted malts. This gives it a rich, nutty flavour and makes it incredibly smooth-drinking. Unlike other, more bitter dark beers and stouts, it’s brewed in a process called bottom fermentation, which gives it a subtle, sweet edge and smooth 5% abv.

Very dark, much thicker than expected, probably the best beer from that region ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from 99 Ranch Market: Liquid appeared a dark brown nearly completely opaque with thin fizzy formation of foam on top. Aroma is mild with a faint whiff of lightly roast malts not authentic to true German Dunkels but good enough to spark my interest into how these malts were pulled off. The flavor of the beer was satisfying and not offensive by any means and drunk real smooth. Roast malt profile in the drink is balanced perfectly by major/macro brewer, so yes, impressive clone of Deutschland Dunkel. I wasn’t happy with the price of over $13 for 6-pack though.

Rating #1035- March 22, 2014 - Bottle from Chateau Gab - 5% - Very dark pour with a weak tan head that is frothy, but fades quickly. Aroma is roasted malts, molasses. Taste is mild coffee, chocolate, and molasses. Finish is quite smooth, this beer is quite enjoyable for a light, roasty lager.

350 ml can bought at TASTE in Festival Walk, Kowloon Tong.

Clear deep blackish brown colour; Half finger head and beige foam which fades in 30 seconds; Small sticky lacing and minimal carbonation; Fragrant and light sweet aroma of roasted dark malt, with caramel, toffee, cream, sugar, light coffee and thin grass; Mid to light sweet taste of light roasted malt, with light nuts, thin rice, very light toffee, light caramel, molasses notes, very light coffee, Cola, light lemon, light bitter hops and thin grass; Light body. Watery and slightly smoky palate; Mouth feel is watery dark lager. Lightly roasted dark malt with nice touch of smoke and light nuts. Despite being thinned by rice, its taste is just shades and did not meddle. Strong Cola feel, solid light toffee and coffee rounded with increasingly strong hops. Pretty solid!... Hoppiness is thin grass in nose, light lemon and grass in taste. Bitterness was light at first but increasingly astringent with further sips for a lasting light bitter finish; Slightly dry after taste; Quite roasty and light bitter to mouth.

Comments: This feels nothing like a Dunkel at all - with a clean taste, minimal sweetness and watery mouth feel, it’s more like a Porter than anything else. Were it’s not the rice for thinning the body, this could have been a decent Stout. As a Porter, this is very solid and I have no complaint. Very easy to go down with aroma and taste in good light touch. Worth stocking it for Summer quaffing!

As expected of a beer from Japan, this is a good looking beer. I don’t know how but the head to beer ratio in the glass is always perfect. This is a very light Dunkel with almost no pallet, I guess that is the ’super dry’ part.

Aroma is roasty malts, licorice and not too much else. Taste is some sweet roasted malt balanced fairly well with a basic hopiness. The malt character finishes pretty watered down sadly. Body is a dark amber with a thin bubbly head that retains somewhat poorly.
