The aroma is fruity and slightly toffeeish. Soft and light palate has some toffee and dark sugars. Maybe a little raisiny fruitiness. Decent, if a little bit plain. Very dark redish brown in colour. Thick bubbly head to begin with, which dwindles after a while. Not bad, but not much to it for a 5%er, a bit on the thin side. Slightly dry in the after-taste. Not bad, if I was stuck in Japan with no Real Ale I’d be happy to drink a few of these. ratman197 (3275), Arvada, Colorado, USA

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Nov 17, 2006 A dark, black beer with mahogany flashes, topped by a thickish white head. A light, and sweetish toasted malt aroma, coffee, and a hint of hop. The mouthfeel is a bit thin and fizzy, but the flavour is smooth, malty, coffee, burnt sugar and dark chocolate. The finish is smooth and malty.Very refreshing, almost as if somone has made a Guinness shandy! Aroma is mild, with slight roasts. Flavor features brown sugar sweetness contrasted with tasty roasts, buttery nuts, and a hint of mocha. Finishes dry with sweet-ash. Although the palate was predictably thin, I was generally impressed by Asahi’s effort. Or was it the novelty of a black beer from Japan? gringo332 (252), Richardson, Texas, USA
