Strong stout, made in the Irish and British tradition. This huge beer is earthy, tar-like, smoky, whiskyish and very much a winter warmer.

Tried this when it first appeared in Tokyo and Yokohama. It is not a finished product but I do admire their pluck. It has a lot of taste but it not quite balanced, a tarry taste. i was hoping for more roasted grains and malts but this was not at all well defined.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Poured into a shaker pint. Pours a clear black with modest tan head that dissipates fairly quickly. First aromas are roasted coffee and milk chocolate with a touch of prune. As it warms up the fruit really stands out along with some sour milk and molasses. Taste is sweet and fruity with molasses there as well. Carbonation was a little soft and the body a little too thin, but still pretty great for a macro as bad as Asahi. The price is phenomenal. Not a bad stout at all.

UPDATED: APR 10, 2015 Bottle picked up from Yamaya in Kyoto before heading to Tadg’s, enjoyed after a temple dinner in Koyasan. Black with two fingers of light tan head. Aromas of caramel, toffee, dark fruit, roast, subtle funk/earthiness. Tastes of caramel, toffee, earthy, dark chocolate, light roast. Medium-light body with a dry finish. Delicious.

Very complicated taste, probably offensive to most lager drinkers. Oily, and quite strong proof.

February 18th, 2014 - I spent a week in Tokyo this month, and it took me a full three days to discover that next to my somewhat sleepy little station was a beer store of epic proportions: Tanakaya. The shelves are packed with beers from all over the world, including the nascent Modern Times brewery, but rather humbly, tucked into the corner, are all the beers of Japan. Hitachi no is a bird often spotted in the States too, but there was a panoply of brews I had never seen before on either side of the Pacific. For obvious reasons, the Asahi Stout didn’t really catch my eye, but a store clerk with a trendy hat pulled it out of the batch like a swift clawed crane game player and handed it to me, insisting that it was surprisingly good. And indeed it was. Unlike the "Black" beers being peddled around convenience and grocery stores, the Asahi is sweet and thick on flavor - a full bodied stout with a medium heavy palate, and all the normal flavors: soy sauce, of course, steak and a little peppery ness too. What’s more remarkable that this brew’s flavor is the general scarcity of the style in Japan. Given that rarity, this comes across as a bold entry to the Japanese market, and was aptly suited for the blizzard that struck Tokyo while I was there.

Bottle to brandy glass Rich malt, caramel, molasses, whiskey, soy, and raisin. Deep opaque brown with a tan head that quickly reduces to a creamy and bubbly ring. Chocolate, molasses, and some sourness. Full bodied, but thin and astringent. For a macro, this is great, but the mouthfeel detracted from the overall experience.

Bottle - Molasses, whiskey and dark fruit. Jet black with a thin ring caramel head. Molasses, sour dark malts almost cherry and a long malty slightly bitter finish.

The elusive Asahi Stout but when you finally find it, it’s not so pricey just 240 yen. Bottle from CBB with an old school label. A very dark brown pour with a nice brown head with decent staying power but no lacing. The aroma was a creamy caramel, like a candy over subtle chocolate. It is surprisingly good, very sweet milk caramel with hints of licorice. All in all a surprisingly good stout at a fantastic price. Why on earth is this not more widely available???
