Wow this really is just Asahi Super Dry with just a handful of chocolate malt thrown in to the mix. The flavor is not bad, there is just very little flavor present. Definitely the lightest "dark" beer I have ever had.

on tap In Osaka. Little of the desired subtle dark flavours you should find in a schwarzbier. pretty ordinary. only slightly more flavour than the usual super dry. but look, it?s good for washing down your food, which is how you usually drink beer in japan. go for the suntory premium malts black instead if you want a schwarzbier.

Can from Yamaya, Hitachinaka, Ibaraki, Japan. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a medium off white/beige head on top. Roasty, malty, chocolate aroma. Tastes similar, roasty, malty, chocolate.

From 330 ml bottle. Pours a dark cola brown with a sudsy tan head that dissipates pretty quickly. Aromas of raisins, caramel and citrus but all very light. Taste is light caramel and roast with a bit of a citrus zing. Very dry - as promised. Clean finish with a little fruit in the aftertaste.

Pours quite dark, almost black, with a reddish glow against the light. Frothy pale tan head that lasts a few minutes. Nose is roasted malt and a hint of molasses. Taste is sweet. Medium body. Lively carbonation. Not bad at all. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

350ml can from Tokyo Liquor on Wyndham St, Ak, pours very dark with a nice lingering frothy head, faint malty caramel aroma, taste is mild & watery with a dry bitter finish

Taste nearly like a standard Asahi Super Dry with black food coloring. The only discernible difference would be that the Dry Black is slightly less sweet.

Deep brown, almost black pour with a thick, light tan head. Aroma is roasty, coffee, grain. Taste is very watery - a little of the roastiness, a little sweet, but really just thin and bland

Bottle at Tanuki’s cave on Queen St. Pours dark with frothy head. Aroma of roasted malts. Very drinkable. Sweet caramel taste, dry and well rounded chocolate nectar. Sort of has a tinge of pineapple in the aftertaste.

0.334l bottle @ Umami. Looks as you’d expect, black there in the glass, a light foamy grey head on top. The nose is what I would describe as soft. Some thin chocolate and roasted dry malts. Other than that I can’t really say that I get anything from this. Taste is just the same really. Feels light oily on the mouthfeel with an average carbonation level. Dry, slightly sweet and roasted with hints of coffee. Not to memorable at all this one. The food however! 11.01.2014

350 ml can bought at YATA in Grand Century Place, Mong Kok.

Clear deep blackish brown colour; Less than one-quarter finger head and residual soapy beige foam which fades in 10 seconds; Moderate sticky lacing and minimal carbonation; Slightly fragrant aroma of roasted malt, with light caramel, light black coffee, toffee, Cola, light sugar and thin grass; Mid to light sweet taste of thin roasted malt, with nuts, strong rice, light toffee, black coffee, Cola, very light lemon, bitter hops and strawy grass; Close to light body. Thin but slick palate; Mouth feel is seriously rice-thinned black Lager - actually good maltyness in a rather slick and not so thin body, strongly roasted and nutty. Loads of rice but quite smooth throughout, not the raw grainy stuff from those cheapo macro Pales. Notable light black coffee and caramel fill up the palate. No sweetness, not very ‘Dry’. Close to the Schwarz style but very dour and lacking. Hmm… Hoppiness is thin grass in nose, light lemon and strawy grass in taste. Bitterness was moderately strong for a lasting, light astringent finish; Fairly dry after taste; Roasty and light bitter to mouth.

Comments: This one feels like the regular Super Dry with dark malt as direct replacement. It more or less emulates the light black beer quite well, albeit artificially because of the rice. Not as dry and crisp as the Super Dry proper, it still worth a chug for a relaxing evening. Just okay and easy.
