5th February 2011 Opaque black beer, small tan head. Light dry palate. Mild dark malt with traces of roast and coffee. Some sweeter malt as well and a little bubblegum ester underneath. Dry finish with a bitter malt and hop snap. Too dry, but okay.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 TBone (9997) - Pori, FINLAND - AUG 8, 2009
Bottled (at Chriso, BB 07/2010).
Dark nut brown, steady creamy beige head. Dark wood, some dark malts in the nose. Light coffee, some mentol-fruity hops, roasted. Toasted finish. This is also very Shep Neamish. Not bad, but not the most interesting English-style Porter either.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Christian (9845) - Odense, DENMARK - DEC 25, 2009
Deep dark brown with a lasting off-white head. Aroma of nuts, caramel, toffee and a little fruit. Sweet toffee flavour with a medium roasted note and a hint of charcoal in the finish.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 imdownthepub (8547) - Banbury, Oxfordshire, ENGLAND - JUL 6, 2006
Bottled, pasteurised, 500ml. Dark brown with red hue, short lasting head. Thinner than expected with a restrained mix of flavour. There is some sharp nuttiness with an earthy dark roasted malt note, but there is also a metallic note going on. Fruity at the finish, quite short, quite drying. Overall a beer thats reasonable, just not great.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 maeib (7634) - Wootton, Northampton, Northamptonshire, ENGLAND - MAY 7, 2005
Bottled. A dark petrolly brown coloured beer with no head. The aroma is fairly thin but there are chocolate malts noticeable. The taste is lightly roasty with more chocolate but, disappointingly, a thin mouthfeel. Obviously a dead beer.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 chriso (7254) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - NOV 28, 2005
500ml bottle from Asda. Stronger than Shep’s own porter. It would be interesting to compare the two but its not really fair to set a pasteurised bottled porter to a fresh cask one. Very dark reddish brown colour. Roasty aroma with lots of licorice. Dry, toasty malt on the palate with a gentle bitterness and a sweet edge. There’s a hint of cocoa powder in there too. Quite nice balance. Decent enough, but fails to excite.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 leaparsons (7129) - Leicester, Leicestershire, ENGLAND - OCT 2, 2003
Looks like a proper porter - dark. The aromas are light sweet coffee with some earthiness. Flavours are too smooth and watery consisting of some roast malts and earthiness. Too light to be great.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 MesandSim (7118) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - NOV 1, 2005
A Mes rate:
First of I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this. Selected by Asda? What the funk do they know? But ahh well it’s a Shepherd Neame so they do at least know something! Not sure how porterish this is but its fairly decent. Aroma is faint but tasty, sweet roasted malts being the order of the day. The nose is really quite good actually but its always hard to rate something that is not on point style wise. Appearance is just how I like it, reddish black and virtually opaque. Head is just a slight covering but at least it doesnt vanish completely. Flavour wise its just one dimensional. Sweet roasted malts, not as much bitterness as you would think and a dollop of creamy chocolate. It has that typical Shepherd Neame stickyness to the finish which I don’t really care for but whatever, I enjoyed this bottle and it slipped down very easily.

Bottle 500ml. Dark brown with slight hint of red, off white head some dark chocolate aromas which also were in the flavour some roastiness there with malts prevalent, this was’nt bad just nothing earth shattering.

Enticing waft of claret and milk chocolate. Filthy tan head atop a coke-like body. vanishing quickly. Chocolate sweetness and a finishing coffee-like smokiness. A generous slug of fruity booze. Pleasant enough, but makes me long for stickier, more decadent Belgians.
