3.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 SilkTork (4736) - Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom, - MAY 18, 2003
UPDATED: MAR 21, 2008 May, 2003 Leaning more toward a brown ale or a mild than a porter, this is a surprisingly pleasant brew. Some elements of licorice and band aid in a smooth, light and well behaved body. [2.8]
June, 2006 This is very drinkable and very enjoyable. There’s nothing interesting or exciting here, but, like a smoked procesed cheese, this is an enjoyable easy drink. Gulpable. Fun. Nice. Mmmm. [3.4]
September 2007 An easy drinking beer with little character. Pleasant enough, though there are some metallic notes, and a lack of the roasty quality one would associate with a dark beer. The colour appears to be gained more from caramel than actual dark malts. There’s a plastic blandness about the whole thing. Drinkable yes, but not interesting or especially pleasurable. I’m wondering why I gave such high scores in the past. [2.4]
March 2008 Gosh this stuff is tasty! I’m wondering why I gave such a low score last time. [3.6]
2.4 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - MAY 10, 2012
Clear 500ml bottle, best before May 2008, drank on a wet and windy evening in Shropshire on 7th Jan 2008.
Poured into a pint sleeve glass.
Very dark ruby red colour with a wonderful foaming deep head, light brown in colour.
The aroma is weak and watery a few malt and hops around but nothing to shout about. A sweet biscuit smell comes later.
There is a hint of burn toast in the taste and some burnt caramel too, but not a sweet porter by any means.
It looked so good, what a pity it is such a watery product with no depth or rich feel to it. I am only having two beers a week during Jan 2008 and I have wasted one on this bottle, bugger!
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 JohnRMurdoch (1564) - Glasgow, SCOTLAND - MAY 4, 2012
Bottle from ASDA. Grassy coffee malt aroma & flavour. Very dark brown colour, decent head. Dry & sweet aftertaste. OK porter.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 burgess1984 (49) - ENGLAND - APR 16, 2012
Smokey and dry, great brew. I picked it up in hope and in future I will buy again. Goes down easily and has a watery mouthfeel. A summer drink for me.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 fairwater (47) - Reading, Berkshire, ENGLAND - MAR 25, 2012
Bottle from Asda. By the cap, brewed by Shepherd Neame. Pours black with no head. Bit more carbonation than I like in a stout. Nose of light hops and dark malts. Slightly fruity taste, with roast coffee. Good, if a bit too fizzy for me.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 stravale (573) - Scottish Borders, SCOTLAND - FEB 5, 2012
Bottle from Asda
Very dark ruby brown...ruby edges...big rocky tan head..reasonable lacing
Aroma - Roasted malt...some dark toffee...sweetish dark malts...yeast...hint of dark fruit..fairly light aroma
Taste - Roasted malts..some spicy bitter hops...bit of coffee...yeast...dark toffee
Palate - Medium carb....thin to medium body...sweet malts....bitter roast and hops. Finish - much more bitter coffee and bitter hops comes through here with a bit over-lingering rather rough burnt toast, sweet dark malt, bit mineraly tail.
Overall - A reasonable porter from Shepheard Neame, spoiled a bit by the roughish finish.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 9/20 ralphdot (606) - Billingham, Durham, ENGLAND - NOV 13, 2011
5.2%, black with a nice head, sweet malt and fruit aroma, malty and there is definitely chocolate in the taste, quite good for a supermarket (Asda Wal-Mart) beer.
3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 anders37 (9890) - Malmö, SWEDEN - SEP 5, 2011
Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a small off-white head. Has a roasted malty caramel aroma. Roasted malty caramel and chocolate flavor. Has a roasted malty chocolate and caramel finish.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Martin243 (242) - Tyne & Wear, ENGLAND - JUL 2, 2011
5ooml bottle from ASDA (surprise, surprise!), served cellar cool. Unmistakably a Shepherd Neame Production, which is usually a minus point for me. Aroma of farmyard and leather. Deepest mahoghany, with a tan head that lasts, full bodied with well balanced flavours, not sweet and sticky like some dark beers. Cold black coffee, and leathery, biscuity dryness in the mouth. Soft carbonation suits the style perfectly. I even like the dumpy, chunky bottle!
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 MiP (11783) - Sønderborg, DENMARK - JUN 29, 2011
Bottle, 5.2%, KØ11. Mild papery aroma. OK roasted flavour, mild and nice. Hint of paper, but not bad.
