I was really surprised by this beer. The nose has elements of caramel and brown sugar in it with a nice backing of roasted jalapeno. Brown with a very small head. Sweet in the front, bitter in the middle, and spicy in the end. The heat is not overwhelming, but plays a subtle partner to the beer’s malt profile. Medium bodied with a spicy warming finish. Went great with carnitas and grilled corn.

Draft. Lightly hazed amber body with medium off-white head. Aroma is moderately sweet, orange, grapefruit, juicy jalapeno. Taste is medium sweet, orange, light chile/chile heat. Light-medium body, light acidity. Really like how the heat in the nose is significantly moderated in the taste.

Tried with a sample at one of the breweries. Not bad. A little spicy, but very mild overall.

Pint at thirsty Monk. Pours a hazy orange. Pretty decent peppery aroma with metallic notes and caramel. The jalapeno flavor is pretty nice with a reasonable strength. A plasticity I associate with some chipotle products turns up, but there’s plenty of good pepper flavor to mask it. Finish has a little drowsiness to it. Pretty good.

Tap. Orange color. Whoa, jalepaño! Tastes of eating a fresh jalepaño. That is all.

Beer #9 Asheville trip. Lightly hazy orange. Aroma is lightly of caramel malts. Flavor is light caramel malts, that are slowly destroyed by a lingering heat. Can’t say the jalapeno did much for flavor, really just making it hot. Not a big fan of chili pepper beers, and this one just confirmed my general bias against them.

Draught at Plant. Malty and a bit chewy. Caramel throughout. Then the presence of jalapeño pepper.

On tap at the Creekside Tavern, this pours a light amber into the glass, with a light soapy head that leaves spotty lacing. The nose is spot on for jalapeño peppers, caramel and some sweet vegetal notes. Flavors are of caramel, biscuit flour, pepper skins and a wallop of capsaicin to finish the pull. The mouthfeel, once past the heat, is medium and carbonated subtly. Very interesting brew here, and I actually quite like the weird combination.

Draft. Pours hazy golden color thin lacing. Aroma of floral, pine, and jalapenos. Medium sweet flavor from the malt, finishes spicy. The spice level is a bit delayed but grows with each sip. Despite the spice, after each sip I’m craving more. One of the most unique beers I’ve had, and I found it to be particularly well done.

The version I sampled was run through a Cilantro & Lime mini-Randall.
The aroma was fresh cilantro.
The flavor was like a mouth full of beer and salsa. The Jalapenos kick in as a subtle yet firm burn on the tongue that kicks in about the third swallow.
I think I would prefer the unfiltered version and would rate it accordingly better.
