On tap @ Asheville Pizza.
Very dark brown, light tan head. Flavor is sweet malt. Chalky far roast. Unique. A bit of smoke. Loads of chocolate malt in the finish. Hints of coffee and caramel. Nice wooded hop character. Rich deep roasted malt nose. Nice caramelized sugar aroma.

Truly art in a glass! Chocolately roasty aroma with a hint of hops. Easy drinking and well balanced. Looking forward to a second glass!

3 Oz sample at Bonnaroo. Really great porter, very roasty and chocolatey tastes, still was light enough to drink in the heat. I love this beer and wished I could find it up north, great porter

Beer #7 Asheville trip. Another solid beer, and probably my actual favorite at Asheville Pizza and Brewing. There were an unusually high number of really good porters in the city. Black. Aroma and flavors matched. Loads of chocolate, but not bitter in nature, toffee, and then a nice mint note on the finish. I’m guessing now that I read the description that this was from the Northern Brewer. Good stuff.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draft, Asheville Pizza and Brewing Co., Asheville NC. Very dark, almost black color with a tan head. Lots of roasted aromas on the nose. Medium body with a generally rounded sweet roasted malt flavor, but a good deal of bitterness toward the end. Finishes dry and almost chalky, much like a very dark chocolate. I was surprised to read the number of "watery" comments given this beer-- this was not my experience at all. Perhaps some kinks have been worked out. It was hot as hell the day I had this, so perhaps any wateriness in the beer was welcome relief to my dehydrated body. Kidding aside, I found this to be an impressive brew.

Pours black with a fairly small light tan head. Big hops on the nose, highly roasted coffee, and dark chocolate. Dark chocolate taste, moderate coffee, a good amount of pine that works fairly well. Medium bodied and creamy, I thought this was pretty good. Think a lighter Black Sun Stout.

Originally reviewed: 1/14/10. Another of the offerings I had at the brewpub the other night. Came out a dark black with a bit of light around the edges. Small tan head capped it off. Sip rings and lace present. Scents of coffee, milk chocolate, and dark breads.
Another full-bodied beer here. I like the depth of this. This is definitely a more coffee-forward beer. Flavors of espresso, pumpernickel bread, and graham crackers. This was my favorite offering of the night I think. Well done!
