A beautifully colored amber ale, Roland’s is loyal to the line of Extra Special Bitters from which it takes its pedigree. The effervescent head releases the spicy aroma and flavor of Cascade hops that accompany the the big malty sweetness of Crystal malt and Roasted barley. The result is a complex medium-bodied beer with a champion flavor reminiscent of cinnamon and caramel. This is a stud of a brew perfect for sharing one or two or three or four with old friends.

Draft at the brewpub on Coxe. Pours an earthy brown with moderate lacing. Malty and mildly bready. There’s little bitterness in this at all, a seeming trend in supposed "bitters" lately ... drinks more like a Mild ale. Light bodied. (#4296, 10/5/2011)

Appearance: Near clear, mahogany-hued body with a slim coating of white suds. Smell: An earthy spiciness yields to sweet-scented caramel-coated toast and a low hint of fruitiness. Taste: A mixture tasting of pale, caramel, and altogether toasty Munich malts. Sweetish in the fore. Nicely timed pop of fruitiness, and spicy, floral, lightly citrusy hops. Lightly bitterness. Fairly drying, but still malty and just a bit sweet at the finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation. Overall: Not bad! A decently drinkable ESB rendition.

Pours clear amber with good lacing. Full aromas of bread & grain. Palate is a little thin, light on hops no real flavor character. Not bad but not great.

Ancient backlog. Aroma of raspberry, other sweet red fruits, nougat, caramel malt, toffee chips, marzipan, some plum-ish fruits, overall malty, fruity, desserty. Flavor predominantly sweet malty with an edge of tartness; tangy sweet with popping fruit and juicy malt. Very drinkable despite all the sweetness, didn’t seem particularly sugary to me. Tasty stuff.
