COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Don’t be put off by the dark color, baby. This beer won’t bite you - not hard anyway. Chocolate, Roasted and Crystal malts give flavors of hazelnut and mocha, but its all right because two big scoops of wheat make for one light bodied beauty that is easy to drink for the whole crew. Mt. Hood hops balance the malt with just a hint of bitterness. Now that’s smooth. It all comes together to make this beer great to get down to, and a staff favorite.

Originally reviewed 1/14/10. Had this at the brewpub the other night. Came out a reddish brown with a small off-white head on top. Left some good sip rings, and little sticky lace. Pancakes, toffee, syrup, and a light roasted malt quality in the nose. This smells pretty good. Body is smooth with a tough of carbonation on the tongue. Good sweet malts right away. Flavors of toffee and mild molasses. Nutty finish. I thought I was ordering a Scottish Ale as this is called "Scottish", but apparently, this is a Brown Ale. I like it.

Tap at Merrimon location. Pours a deep woody amber with a thinning fading head. Aroma is nutty bland caramel malt sweetness some brown sugar, a bit of diacetyl, biscuit roast and light smoke as it warms. Flavor is herbal, grassy, earth, leather brown sugar, medium toasted malts, some caramel and light earthy smoke- finish is a bit slick.

Draft at Asheville Pizza last weekend (finally got all my ratings in). I’m always up for giving a real session beer a chance (not a 7% "session" beer that seems to cover everything without the word "imperial" in front of it). Not packed with flavor or anything, but I didn’t think it would be. Still, for the drinkability and low alcohol... it was missing a little something. Close but not quite.

Serving: Draft. Appearance: Deep amber with a small, foamy, off white head. Pretty good head retention. Aroma: Very light nose. Green, herbal notes along with some over roasted notes. Taste: Malt forward with notes of caramel and toast. A very light bitterness helps to balance things. Palate: Medium carbonation with a medium-light, slightly watery mouthfeel. Short finish. Overall: Lacking a little body, this one is thin on the tongue. Still, it comes across as a table beer that is highly sessionable. Rebuy: No, this one didn’t do much for me.

Draught. Pours clear brown with an average, frothy, white head, lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (caramel, cookie, straw), light hop (grass, herb), average yeast (dough) with notes of dates and brown sugar. Medium bodied, thin texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, light sweetness, moderate acidity and bitterness.

Clear amber body. Sweet malt aroma. Doesn’t have the typical smoke qualities i’ve come to associate with this style. Some butter in the nose. Crystal sweet malt with some noble hop flavor. the aftertaste is a bit chlorinated? Reminds me more of an amber ale.
