The destroyer, the creator, the benefactor. Shiva is all these things. We set out to create an IPA that anyone can enjoy, and we think we succeeded. As the flagship beer in our lineup, we’ve yet to encounter a soul who believes contrary. A crisp, citrusy Indian Pale Ale with a light color, Shiva will destroy all your preconceptions of an IPA. A transcendentally simple malt bill accents a generous helping of Columbus hops, lending an intense floral aroma with hints of grapefruit and a pleasant bittering quality. Your palette will be lifted to higher planes of consciousness with a bittersweet finish.

Draft at APBC. Cloudy orange pour with a white head that has some yellow tint to it. Citrus hops dominate the aroma, leading other scents of sweet malt, pine needles, grapefruit, peach and apricot. Flavor is unbalanced and overly acidic, proving a difficult quaff. Palate is rough and unrefined. Despite all this, it is a tasty IPA, but I wonder how much of my favoritism here can be attributed to the fresh keg and the awesome vibe at the brewpub. just a little too much bite on this for me. I would like to retry this in the future.

GeneralGao (3614) - Iowa City, Iowa, USA - JUN 30, 2006
Draught at the brewpub. Clear dark golden color with thin white head. Citrusy grapefruit hop nose and flavor. Dry with a bitter hop finish. Not as good as the Red Light IPA.

Draught at the WBF in Raleigh. Copper colored, large head. Very hoppy, citrus aroma. Flavor is similar, dry and sweet in finish. Good malt balance with hops.

On tap at the brewpub in Asheville. Medium orange pour, sticky white head that sticks around a while and leaves a thick coat of lacing. Atypical slightly sprucey aroma - not as pronounced as it could be, but pleasant nonetheless. Falvor has hints of citrus - grapefruit to be sure. Slighlty tangy mouthfeel. Overall, a decent brewpub IPA.

UPDATED: MAR 15, 2007 draught. Pours a very cloudy orange hue with a tall white head. The nose is mildly citrusy with strong hints of peach and grapefruit. Shiva is an IPA on the malty side of the style with suggestions of honey, slight lemon zest, grapefruit. Sessionable.

2005 Knoxville Brewer’s Jam This pours with a long lasting foamy head over a copper body. Slightly hazy. Fruity malt aroma. Well balanced flavor lots of hops with a good malt backbone. Not bad, sweet overall with a dry finish.

(Knoxville Brewers’ Jam). Pours cloudy honey orange with dense off-white head. The aroma is butter and wood. Orangey hops compose most of the flavor, along with fruity sweetness and light maltiness.

On tap at Charlotte Oktoberfest ’05. This is not a bad beer, but to me it felt more like an APA than an IPA. Hops were there in the aroma, but when I tasted it they came through somewhat understated. I’d drink it again.

Draught at 11th Southern Brewers Festival in Chattanooga. Pours golden hay with a small frothy off-white head. Floral hop fruity malt aroma. Rind and pine resinous citrus hop and very acidic flavor diminishes the sweet malt character that is behind it all. Medium and light bodeid clean refreshing palate.

Got a chance to talk to the brewer of this one (Doug Rieley) for a short time. This was the stand out for me (as far as IPA’s went at the Southern Brewers festival). Draft sample. Poured a very nice looking pale orange with a moderately sized frothy head. Really great looking brew. The aroma was spicy with citrus hops and a bit of a sweet malt aroma. Flavor had spicy hops with orange peal bitter finish. Crisp, but it lacked some of the backbone I expected from the aroma. Overall, a very nice and refreshing brew.
