Cask conditioned at Coventry Beer Fest ’12. Black with tan head. Yes, certainly liquorice, bitter but with a sweet toffee crackling note too. Smoky, peaty malt note. Pretty decent.

Tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival in May 2010. Cask, gravity dispense. Dull black in colour with an open buff head which vanished quickly. Strange lingering aroma of McCoys bacon sizzler crisps? Oily mouthfeel and no lacing. Dark malts give a strong mix of black treacle and liquorice flavours. Bitter hop resins seep into the aftertaste and dominates the finish with dry tanins. An interesting stout but one is more than enough.

Scopey (1658) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - SEP 26, 2011
Cask at the Bricklayers Arms Derby Beer Fest. It pours darkest brown, with a thin bubbly beige film. The nose is liquorice allsorts, soy sauce, toasted sesame seed, leather and charcoal. The taste is full of liquorice, charcoal, roasted mal, sour tang, burnt malt, salt and dark dried fruit. Thin to medium body and soft carbonation. A bit too thin and too much liquorice for me.

Cask at Bricklayers BF, London. Brown pour with a bubbly, tan head. Dry and roasty. Very dry flavor, some minerals, moderate roast, some burnt sugar. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Very dry finish, some burnt sugar, light dark fruit notes, hard roast malts. Decent.

Cask at GBBF 2010. A pitch black beer with a tan head. The aroma has strong roasted notes combined with medium hoppy notes. The flavor is sweet malty with extremely storng notes of liquorice - too much for me, combined with some roasted malt, leading to a dry, roasted, woody, and liquorice finish.

Cask @ GBBF 2010, Great British Beer Festival, Earls Court Exhibition Centre, London, England.

Clear dark brown color with a small, fizzy, fair lacing, fully diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is light light heavy malty, roasted, coffee. Flavor is heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, licorice. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is flat. [20100804]
