COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Aspen Brewery’s Independence Pass Ale is Aspen Brewery’s super-hopped high altitude rendition of the classic India Pale Ale style. Independence Pass Ale utilizes insane amounts of Palisade hops, a hop that is relatively new on the IPA scene. Don’t be afraid if you have not heard of Palisade hops, with alpha acids up near the 10% mark, IPA aficionados will love the hoppy brew as much as they love their magnum and cascade-hopped IPA’s. In addition, we use Columbus, Cascade, and Simcoe hops. Set in contrast with our secret mash recipe, be prepared to be wowed. This beer stinks of hops, hops, hops. Why is this style called India Pale Ale you ask? During the height of the British Empire, Brits working and living in India craved their English style ales; however the traditional English ales would not survive the journey from England to India. What English brewers discovered was that increasing the hop content of a beer preserved the ale enough to survive the long sea journey. What West Coast brewers discovered nearly a century later was that ‘over-hopping’ a beer increased the delicious hop flavor of the ale, paying more respect to rich American hop flavor than even the malt flavor base. Independence Pass marks the eastern boundary of the Roaring Fork Valley and the City of Aspen. With a summit elevation of 12,095 feet, we HIGHLY recommend that the inexperienced beer drinker is EXTREMELY careful drinking this high-alcohol brew at such altitude. You wouldn’t want to fall down the pass! We couldn’t help but name our high-hop beer after this high-elevation pass – maybe due to the combined delirious effect, or maybe because the initials worked out well.

Cosy little brewery in downtown Aspen. Had this IPA and loved it. Had another favorite with 9.2% ABV but was a bit much.

Really good. Citrus hop aroma. Light copper color with a foamy head. Medium weight with high carbonation. Felt fresh. Nice citrus with some grapefruit flavors and a slight caramel backbone that finished sharp. Good first impression of the brewery.

Dominant bitterness with lots of pine take over right from the start and does not let anything else through. Not a bad brew by any standards but a little too one-sided.

This was a very solid beer. Nice hoppy flavors with a sweet finish. I really enjoyed this beer, especially after climbing Independence Pass.

Can thanks to northernbrews for sharing. Clear gold pour with a thin ring of head. Aroma is somewhat faint but nice. Pulpy orange juice, grapefruit and light tropical fruit. Tastes like pulpy orange juice but with thinner body. The grapefruit complements it well and there’s a hint of flowers in the finish. Pretty good.

Can: Thanks, Jeff. Cloudy burnt amber color with a small off-white film that settles as a moderately foamy collar. Aroma is mildly floral with bits of orange flesh & grapefruit peel, you can definitely get the Cascade. Slightly juicy with a very mild tropical essence. Light, wet grass. Taste is pretty juicy as well; nice gushing orange, mango, & grapefruit flavors are balanced with a slightly herbal, ashy, & grassy hop back-end. Lingering white pepper covered grapefruit peel finish, almost like Centennial. Slightly oily body. Pretty nice.

Bottle: The aroma consists of light-moderate citrus, perfume, and grass. It pours a transparent golden-orange with a small soapy white head that quickly fades to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. The flavor starts with citrus and a touch of fruit. He finish has grapefruit, faint floral notes, and a touch of dankness. It’s light bodied with moderate carbonation.

Can into a nonic pint. Pours gold, quarter-inch of white head. Aroma of sugar, a bit of citrus and cereal, not much else. Taste is burnt rubber, soap, pine, sugar. Overall, too sweet. Almost tastes like a hoppy barleywine. meh. not too drinkable. wouldn’t seek this out again.
